As with everything WRONG with the world, I blame the popularity of the SM7Bullshit on Hipsters and Millenials. Hey now hold on. I wear flannel, make my own sour dough bread, and have a mustache. Shouldn’t I get an Sm7 issued to me as part of the hipster package??? It hasn’t shown up at my place yet. Is there a rebate card I have to use or something to get it sent to me? no rebate card - I think you just have to Connect with Shure on Facebook, Follow their Twitter, and Like enough of their Instagram posts.  |

I wonder if part of this might be everyone who uses a 58 or 57 live asking their FOH engineer what mic should I get for recording at home?
The FOH guy knows the Shure works and especially right now money is probably tight , so the SM7 is the choice of the day. Plus unlike most studio condensers it can be handled a bit.

Yep, I’ve had my 421 win vocal shootouts several times. Never happened with a 421, but I have had a 441 win shoot-outs before. Rarely, but it happens. That microphone is amazing. but I'd better be careful here, I am referencing a real mic in an SM7beard thread. |

LOL! I totally understand Ward. One time I sang/tried SM7>Little Labs LMNO Pre. It actually was an excellent vocal chain on me. Then I woke up! (kidding kidding) But I still felt some internal resistance, to accepting it. Never looked good with a beard, or long hair. 441 always reminded me as the cavier of dynamic microphones. Super classy! I've been amazed (probably naively) at how ubiquitous the SM7B is in pod casts and "from home" concerts since the lock down - the only mic that seems to come close in popularity is the Blue Yeti, which is very actively marketed for Internet use, etc. yet still seems to be a distant second choice. I think I've only seen one RE-20 and a couple of 58's (or look alikes) otherwise. And for the concerts, you would think that most of these musicians have access to a wide choice of mics and good advice on selection. I'm not sure if the popularity is down to the influence of Joe Rogan, et al, but it seems to have reached a tipping point of some kind.
I don't have any axe to grind against the SM7B, just surprised at the lack of diversity and curious about the popularity of this one mic. In fact I'm not sure I have a point of any kind - I was just driven to flaunt my (naive) amazement for some reason. Probably cabin fever.

You know, over the course of the last three days, I kind of “got it,” almost an a-ha moment: I’ve left my SM7B up on the Latch Lake all week, and have just pulled the boom over when I’ve needed it. I wouldn’t want to do that with a more expensive condenser, like my Soyuz, but honestly, if something happens to the SM7B, I just don’t care that much. And I’m not worried about dust on the diaphragm, etc.
Today I put it through the Weight Tank 72 and a Stam LA-2A, and it picked up some of that sparkle. Really didn’t sound too bad.

One of the Soyuz guys (Marc Kuzio) has been in touch, and says they're waiting on a shipment from Russia right now. I'm not sure if that's going to mean a new mic for me, or what, exactly. But he's been attentive. And pretty cool that in this case, he actually lives about 30mins up the road from me.

<rant> It seems like every time I look at a video, there's a SM7B being used. Streaming concerts, youblewed videos, etc.
Has the SM7B become the more ubiquitous microphone since the SM57/58?
Are the Shure bean-counters triple checking sales to make sure this dinosaur is actually hotter than this month's centerfold?
I don't particularly care for Shure dynamic mics (although I really like many of their condensers), and I'm a little drunk, so there!!!

It's big but doesn't really cover the face in videos. Looks impressive. It's not terribly sensitive, the larger diaphragm is heavy, so it doesn't pick up a lot of high frequencies nor a lot of room tone so it's good for live stuff too. |

You haters are strange. It's a time tested tool that doesn't just "work" but sounds great doing it. Vocal, guitar cabs, bass cabs, drums... It's one of the mics I bring with me to 100% of the sessions I do, even if the studio already has one (because having 2 means I get to use 2).

Definitely not "hater", but IMHO the capture from a SM7 varies from "pretty good" to great".
For a strong AE (sure ain't me!), we can bump that range from"good to great".

You haters are strange. It's a time tested tool that doesn't just "work" but sounds great doing it. Vocal, guitar cabs, bass cabs, drums... It's one of the mics I bring with me to 100% of the sessions I do, even if the studio already has one (because having 2 means I get to use 2). I have one. I even used it recently - July 2012. It sits on a shelf collecting dust, awaiting a work engineer to come in and show me the error of my ways.  |
