<rant> It seems like every time I look at a video, there's a SM7B being used. Streaming concerts, youblewed videos, etc.
Has the SM7B become the more ubiquitous microphone since the SM57/58?
Are the Shure bean-counters triple checking sales to make sure this dinosaur is actually hotter than this month's centerfold?
I don't particularly care for Shure dynamic mics (although I really like many of their condensers), and I'm a little drunk, so there!!!
</rant>
Have a nice day!

I’ve told this story before, but when I got mine, in the mid to late 90s, before the B version, I got it because RE20s seemed to be everywhere and I wanted something different. Oh well. It is the best vocal mic for my pinched, nasal vocals. Is also my favourite dynamic mic on guitar cabs. And I’m sure I used it as a kick mic, possibly bass cabs. Did I have it when I was recording horns? Can’t remember. It’s been a workhorse. But pulling a 57 a couple inches back can be similarish. Hadn’t used it in a while and opened the case to find the foam screen crumbling. Just got a replacement off amazon. Was about $20 Canuck. No biggie.
Cheers, Geoff

The best thing 55s are for is subduing drunks, in the absence of an E-V 664.

In the greater scheme of things the SM7B is cheap, the rejection is pretty good. It’s a decent vocal mic and it look Kewel. It really is a great mic for someone who wants to make demos in an urban apartment.

I've got two RE16s that are close enough to the RE20 to do it for me. I like the RE sound.

Chris I'm sure you already know this, but The Eagles (who I really don't care for except for 2 songs of which that is not one) were not singing about a Shure SM55 (and not being Elvis impersonaters probably would not) They were singing about a Chevy.
And I hate that song - the Eagles, prototype for "bro country". Ick.
FWIW, the two songs of theirs I do like are "Lyin' Eyes" and "Heartache Tonight".
FWIW #2 - And a "Dude" is a tourist on a horse. A very gentle horse.

Good looking mic for video and good room rejection. The retail price has gone up over the last few years in our country. I guess it is due to increased popularity. It is a pretty good mic for its price bracket.
I use one for Youtube covers and I always have one setup at my desk for writing. I can track vocal lines without switching to headphone. The sound is serviceable fine for writing/demos/live covers etc.
There have been worse trends out there. haha

And Michael Jackson.

On a street corner, no less.
What about street noise? Time management.

Eagles were not the prototype from bro country. 90s nashvegas country, sure....me thinks you have no idea what bro country is....
I love the Eagles.
As yo the use of sm7 in youtube videos, what else would they use? Its a great mic for youtube style “wherever” sessions. Im not sure why everyone hates on it.
Also joe rogan is a golden god....

As with everything WRONG with the world, I blame the popularity of the SM7Bullshit on Hipsters and Millenials.

But "it's a Thriller"! IMHO sometimes a SM7/58/57 can occasionally sound geat. But... more_work_to_get_there. (for me certainly) Chris

SM57 with the Shure pop filter and the SM7B are awesome for metal vokills. The SM58 should be for live use only. That metal pop guard doesn't work that great and you'll have to comb the tracks.

If it's in the style of The Stone Roses... I enjoyed the 58 vocals on those dense mixes. But even then I prefer the EV635a on myself. More predictable.
BTW I'm a fan of Leckie's productions... Chris

As with everything WRONG with the world, I blame the popularity of the SM7Bullshit on Hipsters and Millenials. Hey now hold on. I wear flannel, make my own sour dough bread, and have a mustache. Shouldn’t I get an Sm7 issued to me as part of the hipster package??? It hasn’t shown up at my place yet. Is there a rebate card I have to use or something to get it sent to me?

Just like any piece of audio gear if it gets used enough on successful records it becomes a safer purchase for people who probably can't drop $2k+ for a vocal mic. Add in the needs of recording in untreated rooms and it makes sense that it would become a top choice. Shure has a bigger presence in the US than Beyerdynamic so that probably explains the popularity over the M88. It used to be slightly cheaper than an RE20 (looks like it's gone up since I got one), and it's definitely cheaper than a 441. I think 421's got a reputation as a drum mic so people don't think of it as a vocal mic as much anymore.

I think they make great vocal mics, usual caveats apply. I had an client where I used a 421 for scratch vocals as we were composing the album. We kept going back to those vocals thinking how great they sounded. We used it for his next album and were both really happy with the result.

Yep, I’ve had my 421 win vocal shootouts several times.
