So true! Sounds though that 80Hz, likes the 251 style. Which is wonderful for John K's voice, but is the "Red Headed Step Child" on mine! The REDD was a lot better than any 251 style (on me), and IMHO I thought it was more of an "all rounder" for a variety of voices-at least to my ear. Definitely more Modern, than the "specific gravity" of my taste-Which is the mighty U47! Then listen to Heiserman/Bock/Flea, before shelling out any big bucks for a Neumann U47/67! Chris
Appreciate all the replies. Yea I certainly intend to try and locate these in my area to demo (post social isolation) - but curious nonetheless about people's experience across a variety of sources...
Speaking of which, has anyone tried the Chandler Redd on instruments, or more specifically acoustic guitars?
I have no personal experience, but I can tell you that drsax into Redd into Silver Bullet = Sax Heaven!! Amazing tone, although I'm pretty sure that dr himself is 95% of the sound.

Don't know if anyone is a Trey Anastasio fan here, but he's been using the Chandler on all of his facebook livestreams the last few weeks. I think it sounds really great. FWIW...found out, for the new Phish record, they used four REDD Microphones, one planted on Trey's vocals for the album, the rest elsewhere; also a TG Microphone. I checked it out a few weeks ago when it came out, but I didn't give it a proper listen....I'll have to go back and check it out!

Going to sell my MA-1000 to get me a REDD. Why? Please elaborate. Have you tested them, or A/B'd them? I own the REDD & love the hell out of it but have always been curious about Royer's "251 attempt". Also curious why someone would choose 1 mic over another.

I have found the ma-1000 not as 3d as the Bock. It is does have a low end but actually i would not call it extended like the Bock. I just think I have a hankering for trying out the Redd, maybe the onboard preamp is a great bonus I want to try.

IMHO both the Bock and REDD line, are somewhat above the Mojave sonically. I think the Soyuz's and Heiserman's, are a more interesting comparison. That reminds me, to score a Lottery Ticket... To get ALL Bock U99/REDD & TG/Soyuz Tube/Heiserman Tube food groups. Along with a Manley Silver & Tonelux JC37, thrown in for good measure! Chris

Just to through another mic in the mix. I was quite surprised by the sE Gemini III multi pattern dual tube mic LTD ed mic. I think that mic smokes the MA-1000 Not often I come across a mic that nails both the front and back capsule sound in Fig 8. Not sure why it doe snot get so much attention as it doesn not sound like the Gemini II at all. But anyway back to the original thread.
