I tracked a tune I was going to originally sing and now I want a female version...What's the best way to bring it up a full step? Melodyne? Part by part?

Varispeed was the old fashioned way to do it, and I'd recommend it if you like the results you can get from that. After that I'd say your best bet is do it part by part. Plain old pitchshifters would be my last option, but they're quick and easy. EDIT: Incase you don't have Varispeed as an option - If you recorded at 44.1Khz, changing the playback rate to 48Khz gives you more or less a 2 semitone change (6% increase in speed giving us a single semitone means 10% is about 1.6 semitones). If you tracked at 48 (and I think you've said before you do) you can manually reset your clock to 56 or 60Khz while tracking and get the same result. You will however have to either bring it back down or undergo SRC to get it back to a standard playback rate. Reaper just has a fader at the bottom for playback rate

Last time I tried that I did a shootout of all the usual suspects. The winner, much to my surprise, was Waves SoundShifter provided I up sampled the tracks from 48 to 96k and then back down to 48 with the drums.

Personally I always retrack. Pitch shifting always sounds weird to me.

I've always retracked....but, that's always been for ME...so, going down in pitch--not up.
I always change the pitch digitally-and then replace them...and just can't deal. But, just give it a shot with whatever OFFLINE algo is in ProTools. I'll end up keeping things like some background pad or something that's going to be buried, but a main bass or guitar or piano riff? Nope.

If it's a serious deal, retracking is best. If it's a quickie, Serrato Pitch N Time. Not cheap, but IMO, offers the best solutions for changing pitch and/or time. Sometimes small multiple increments are better. Other times, you can do the whole pop at once and it's fine. The things that suffer most are percussion, drums, etc. Luckily, if you have only a key change and you're shifting individual parts and not an entire mix, you don't need to mess with those, and you might luck out and have it be virtually undetectable. I haven't figured out why sometimes you absolutely cannot tell the difference, and other times, you can, but it works the best IMO.

Well, I'm not going to re-track...was just hoping to go up a step for a female vocal.

In the examples of when you can't tell the difference, is it a distorted sound or does that make a difference?

I couldn't retrack because the bass player is dead! The difference was in feel. At 48 P&T was the best but at 96k the waves, which I almost didn't bother with, beat it handily.

Yeah...I'm afraid I'm screwed...It even introduced weirdness in the mono bass part...

HOLY MUSLIM SHIITE...I stand corrected! I just demo'd the EDITOR version of Melodyne (I have the Asst.) and it's working like a freaking miracle. I mean, really intricate fingerpicked accoustic...
