Stimulus check will be coming man and im already drooling ove these EQs ready to tear it up. this will be my first hardware EQ i want to get to experiment with tracking. What im seeking is nice color/ transformer warmth/ smooth with mojo to color my signal chain. i narrowed it down to there 3 choices, out of these 3 for someone that may have used them. could any of you give me your opinion, what you likes or even dislike about these and which one you recommend? i was thinking also grabbing ez1081 and retro 500 pre both and use one of these EQs above in the chain

Hi, Gearlust, :-)
I own 2 out of the 3 eq's you're looking at.
I think my Neve 551 pair are very classy & lots of flexibility, and they have a very sweet transformer tone. The TG12345 MKIV pair I own are classic and vintage-y, not as flexible as they're really only two bands. BUT... I'll never sell them, as they do impart something I love.
I've never heard the Electrodyne EQ's.
Hope that helps, sir!
PS: Other hardware EQ's I own:
Great River EQ-2NV (Very flexible) Avalon 737 (EQ is beautiful & glassy – not vintage) Heritage Audio '73EQ-jr pair (AWESOME sound – If you love VINTAGE '73, I'd recommend this instead of all of the 551 or TG)

TG is also transformer based if im not mistaking? which one do you like more? would you say 551 is more modern smooth sounding and TG classic vibe like you said.. which imparts more character? Electrodyne is also 2 band btw, they were offering an alternative updated version at some point but i think they may have stopped making it

Both very nice. Electrodyne is one of the nicest 500 eqs but it's very limited. I would not be happy as my only eq but for tracking it's probably enough. The Neve is cool but I didn't love it enough to keep it. For what I do the Capi lc53a was more fitting, smoother top end though the lows on the Neve were bigger.

Gearlust,
Good question. I just added a bit to my original post, by the way.
Honestly, I really think what you're describing can be met more in the Heritage Audio '73EQjr.
I don't think the TG is imparting as much "vintage tone" as I had expected. On top of that, I think the Neve 551 is super slick/clean (like all of Rupert's later designs). I really think the Heritage may be your cup of tea.

Wht not get their 1073 pre/eq for 500 series? I find it to sound much better than their 1081.

Gearlust,
I agree with BriceJChandler. I've not owned an AML "anything" yet, but I've heard some samples online, and I think you'd couldn't go wrong. It would put you in that zone you're describing.
The two pairs I own that were in your thread title are nice EQ's. I just don't want to steer you in the wrong direction. You have a precise tonal quality you're looking for, and I don't think those would entirely do it for you.

I have a pair of the electrodyne’s 511 and agree with the above post . I love them but I wouldn’t want them to be my only eq’s . They are limited but when they are right they are great. That being said you might also look at the ironage sie eq’s that are coming out , but might be a while on them.

If I only could have one hardware eq I definitely would want it to have at least 3 bands.

I had the RND 551 I sold it quickly, I didn't like it at all.... zingy Cheers Wiz Why As I mentioned, I felt is sounded zingy... the high end was well... zingy.... 8) Also the spec of the EQ when the EQ is engaged, but flat... is +- 1dB , mine had nearly 2db Difference in the EQ when flat....I even contacted Neve... its normal... thats a large swing when an EQ is flat and inserted... There are better choices in my opinion... Speck ASC for instance Cheers Wiz

If the Chandler is anything at all like the EQ on the TG Channel, and I'm guessing it is, then that would be my vote. Those sound REALLY good.

The TG12345 MKIV pair I own are classic and vintage-y, not as flexible as they're really only two bands. BUT... I'll never sell them, as they do impart something I love. Hi Chad, Old thread bump - do you still feel this way about the 500 TG EQs? I love the Curve Bender but have no way of testing the MKIVs. Do they have a similar tone-enhancing effect just being in-line?

Do they have a similar tone-enhancing effect just being in-line? Hi, sentientsound. Good question. I just sold that pair of Chandlers two weeks ago. In my build, I’ve landed on Heritage Audio EQ73 Jr’s and Rupert Neve Designs 551’s. In my tests, those seem to play well together. Hope that adds something to your search for answers. I hate to give the standard answer, “Try them and see if they’re your thing,” because that’s frustrating, I know. Overall, I just felt I was getting more of a fluid “console sound” by sticking with that classic 1970’s Neve [as presented by Heritage] and modern Rupert Neve sound. It really is the sound in my head for a variety of styles. Economics and simplification both have played into my trimming down and getting more “focussed” these past 2-3 years.
