Guys, I have my Daking FET III connected to my MR816. I come out of 7&8 and back to 1&2. I am working on a song that has a quiet intro and noticed hiss.
is this a typical battle with patching outboard? Can anyone help me solve the problem? Thanks in advance for any insight. rob

That's it. Just the above.
I had some press in the chain but took them off the buss.

If you're expecting silence, you won't get it from any analog gear...but, if it's to problem levels, there's something wrong. the 816 is configured at +4? I would run the loop without the Daking--otherwise, just connect the two cables to their matching ends (where they would normally go in and out of the unit)--does the hiss still exist? If not, it's the Daking's self noise...if it's still there, the issue is on the end of cables or more likley the 816's inputs that have universal circuits on them.
If you're coming back in it's 1+2 insert returns, those are unbalanced and -10....level mismatches might account for noise as you're putting 10db more level in somewhere to even out, no?
Take the Daking out of the loop (leaving cables and IO) and see if it goes away.

OK - Solved and funny. It wasn't my outboard - it is the Waves emulation noise of outboard on other channels. Now that' funny.
Solution - mute automation. Done.
Just wanted to report back that the Daking is dead silent.

Ahh...yes--it's funny to me that the Waves things and VCC add more noise to mixes than any analog console/outboard I ever used. I find it funny because I wonder if that's become some mark of authenticity for those who don't know from authentic. Like "ooh....it must be accurate listen to the noise." Best part of VTM is the ability to have tape "sound" without the noise--which was always HUGELY significant--to the point that it altered workflow--having to compress on the way in in order to keep the RMS above the noise floor, boosting highs too much on the way in because if you boosted them much on playback, you would raise the noise floor disproportionately to the recorded signal....etc...

BTW--it's another of digital's self fulfilling prophecies--everyone has full automation, now, right? I use a lot of mute automation to silence silly noisey analog emulation plug ins! Where I'd have never needed to automate the actual analog channels which didn't HAVE the automation anyway.

another thing to keep in mind, all outboard gears input to output relationships are NOT created equal, they usually have a sweet spot in relation to each other, ratio's and thresholds not withstanding, they all have significant bearing on the noise floor of the piece. A for instance, my JW Aphex 651's LOVE a lot of input, if you act intuitively and set a moderate input, you'll get hiss on the output, when feeding the input hard you get silence on the output, and all parameters work better and the unit sounds better(not in a H/D way either, the units are EXTREMELY clean, fast and transparent). I find this I/O relationship to be of consequence on almost every piece of outboard i've become familiar with over the years, So…? I hope this helps
