So 2020 has not been going well equipment wise. My main monitors eve sc307. One of them has taken a dump. With the virus and such it will probably take a month or more to get them fixed. So my options are to buy a replacement sc307. or I can buy a different set to hold me over. Truth is it would give me a chance to play with some other monitors I wanted to try. I know some or much of these choices won’t be on the same level as my eves.
1 presonus spectre s6 or s8 2 fluid fpx7 3 equator q10 or q12
i can get any of these for under $1200 or less
i would like to be able to mix and make tracks with these. I still have focal cms50 for critical mixing but they are not very loud. I need my monitors loud for clients too.
Any other options in my price range?

I didn’t think Equator was in business anymore.

I realize this is beneath the spend level for most here but after having the PSI A21m's for a few months and going back, I have no hesitation in sharing this:
Scepter 8's with a sub and Sonarworks do really well with lots of detail and translate every time for me.

I always wanted to try those Q10’s or Q12’s. If I were just trying to get something inexpensive for band playback I would probably get the KRK 3 ways or Kali 3 ways.

I still would like to be able to mix on them. I hated those KRK 3ways. I hated anything KRK rocket. Except the first passive ones. I always felt like at lower volumes the KRK 3way drivers were not at the same level. The mid pushed out more. And This is the first I heard of the kali 3 ways. Need more info.

The used market is definitely in favor of the buyer right now. I bet you could score something pretty good for less than 1k.

I used to have the sceptre s6. Really fantastic monitors. I actually upgraded to the sc307’s but the s6’s were better for mixing. I use my eves for overall feel and my ns10’s for more critical mix moves. What happened to your speaker? Should I worry about mine??

Hunt for deals. The JBL LSR 708p (used) and KRK V6S4 (under 1k a pair if you get a deal or are in Europe) get shit done when you learn them and sound good. The 708 sound bigger in lows and highs, thus more client pleasing, but are more processed sounding in the mids and up top. It’s way nicer than the presonus, which has more hornflare. The V6 is warmer and more natural in the mids and up top but the low end is just there for extension and rolls off after 60hz. The Yamaha HS8 also gets shit done and is more client pleasing than the V6, not as much so as 708, due to the better low end but I found judging compression on it impossible. It’s still a great option for more natural mixes. These three sound nothing alike but all preserve the midrange while keeping low end extension, letting you get shit done quickly unlike scooped Dynaudio, Genelec, or Mackie. The other cheaper or bigger sizes aren’t as good. Clients like when you solve their problems. That’s why they pay you. If you can’t hear the problems because the midrange has black holes, you can’t solve their problems. Big, euphonic hifi sound in the studio is a temporary fix like offering them a beer. Those problems will still be in the back of their mind and bother them when they put on a pair of headphones or crank it up in a car. The K-Roks were decent, cheap, and usable. The Rokits are all unusable for mixing but the original Rokit 10-3 way isn’t too bad for client playback. It is very hifi but not a total mess like the other Rokits. It just has the problem of being a midfield that can’t get LOUD due to the cheap amps inside. It’s not meant to be a mixing speaker. The others are meant to be tracking and mixing monitors and are mostly crap. The new KRK Rokit 5 S4 was the only one of the new ones with any midrange but the front port chuffs horribly and bleeds heavily into the midrange. The treble is not fatiguing unlike most cheap speakers but it lacks enough detail for mixing. Pops and clicks in vocal tracks that had to be removed were inaudible on it. The more expensive KRKs are incomparably better. The current Rokits are a “value-engineering” of the current ones into unusable hifi crap but will sell a thousand times the units of the V series. Kali is marketing extensively with reviews of free promotional pairs but the LP6 wasn’t as tight as the JBL LSR 305 mkII and costs more money. The LP8 was flabby. I don’t care if they have less distortion if they’re not reactive and dull up top. I need that top end information to solve problems. A pair of earbuds or a phone speaker are not gonna give the big picture while the pops, clipping, and tracks in the mix that just don’t sit will be obvious. So many consumer hifis and headphones have totally fucked up treble too. I bet you the cabinet and the woofer of the IN8 are the same as the LP8. They’re almost certainly going to be worse than the HS8. Everybody I know who bought the Kali 6 and 8 blind sold them off for either the HS8 or better speakers.

I went into the studio and my right speaker sounded like water was left on. I just changed my monitor controller and I thought that was faulty. I traced it to the right speaker. Turned it off and unplugged it and it would not come back on. It did come back on today 2 days later but I want to send it out to be checked anyway.

You might be able to just recap it pretty easily.

In the meantime, those Sceptres are great speakers. A little noisy but I just kept the volume set lower on the speaker. The amps are hot!

Thanks for all the advice. I was wondering about another option and that would be to go up and get something better than the eves. For about 3000 what would be the main mix / fun to make music on Monitor? All I have read so far points me to the lyd48. Just kind of wondering what’s out there. I would be fine going used.

I wanted to conclude my post so I can tell what I ended up doing. It’s one of my pet peeves. I hate not know what the OP ended up doing.
So it took Eve audio about 4 months to repair my monitor and in the end they just sent me a new one. This was after numerous emails and calls and many Eve promises.
So in the meantime I went thru a few monitors. Hs8 Mackie, krk. I tried to get a set of sceptres but I kept missing the deals. So off some luck I find a pair of pmc tb1+. I read some good things but I had never heard them or knew anyone that used them. But I needed to get back to work so I picked them up. I got them and I thought there was something wrong with them or I had wired the things out of phase. The lack of low end punch compared to the eves was dramatic even compared to the cms50 which is a smaller woofer. I had to get back to work so I started mixing and damn the translation on the pmcs was so much easier. Better reverb tails , faster vocals. Faster mixing. I am a lil salty behind what eve audio did but I did like the eve monitor. It just made everything sound good. What was really telling was that I got a deal on a set of JBL last 6332 passive those told me the straight truth. If a mix suct that’s what it was. Those too had less low end punch than the eve monitors.
I am very happy with those two sets. I am about 2300 $ into the two sets and amps. When I got the eves back I sold them for about 1950$.

I sold my PSI A21m's (raising money for studio build), and I'm in the same situation looking for temporary monitors. Some ears I trust highly recommended the Kali monitors, so I might try those......

I think the biggest thing I learned was I had been picking monitors with my eyes and more importantly there is this line between better and best where diminished returns lives. It should be easy to see but the grass seems greener so we keep looking for something better. There are some great low end speakers but they are not better than a great set speakers And a great set cost. This shouldn’t be confused with an expensive set. You can learn to mix on most anything. A great set of speakers just makes it easier to do.
