I don't see anyone talking about these on here? Has anyone built one and if so how do they sound? Has anyone roughly priced one out?

Looks nice. Anyone build one here? Got through 16 pages and did not see a rough finished price.

I remember PRR coming up with his tube compressor in it's original form. It was designed to be a consumer level tube compressor that uses the most affordable components to achieve the goal of a few dB of great vari-mu mastering/bus compression. He used the cheapest available transformers (even automotive-ground-split transformers for 10 bucks) and audio tubes to accomplish the task to give everyone the opportunity to have a DIY vari-mu in his rack. Cheapest thing would maybe to build it up point-2-point/breadboard and source parts by yourself, just like it was originally intended...or etch the first versions pcb's somebody worked out shortly afterwards and gave to the public...

Looks like AC Sound took it to another level with the PCB and all the options built in.

I built one of the original PRR vari-mu. I still have it, but haven't used it in forever. Maybe I should put it in the rack and try it out again.
I remember it sounding decent, but the compression was very touchy and it had hum issues. I used the layout that was on the internet at the time, what that Kent's?

Well, it uses 6bc8 tubes and is tuned for that, it has INA/DRV de-balancing and balancing stages, which should be fairly neutral and don't do much or anything to sound. Otherwise, topology is similar. Completely different...well, i would say "relatively" different. Which says nothing about sonic qualities. Version 5 'may' be a bit more versatile in usage.
Concept is totally different. Least cost DIY vari-mu against fully blown up modded project. Personally, if i had a few 6bc8 tubes i want to spend somewhere, i would probably go for a PM660....
BR, Martin
