Not trying to be that guy but I just took delivery of an ASP 880 from a major retailer with a generous return policy. I have not opened it. It checks all the boxes for me but now all of a sudden issues with them dying, fritzing out, and not working properly are popping up every where. Should I just send it back and not potentially cause myself any grief? It’s not like there a ton of 8 channel mic pres with ADAT out there that have these features. First world problems for sure.

I bought one used about three years ago. It has worked really well… Although the power supply blew a capacitor last year. I sent it to a repair facility in Los Angeles recommended by Audient. Been working great ever since.
Based on my experience, I recommended this unit to a friend of mine figuring that my errant power supply issue falls under the heading of sh@t happens….
His experience has been an utter nightmare… Bought the first unit, It quickly went bad… Sent it back and got a second unit… That one immediately went bad… Sent it back… Got a third unit… Same scenario.
So while my personal experience has been good with the unit, something definitely seems to be up with their quality control of late.

3 recent bad ones and other anecdotal info about poor qc is concerning.
Your new unit could be fine. I’d plug it in and don’t turn it off, ensure it’s ventilated but if some part is bad it should just go: soon!
If everything is ok, it should just keep working.

This is what is concerning me. I don’t want to get on the bad batch merry go round.

Qc and SPC stats are in your favour, as out of spec parts/ builds should be in the very, very small minority. Your call. I’d plug in in !

Options are your friend ! But alas, not all options are prudent. Your suggestion of busting it out and plugging it up is sage advice indeed.

I had one and used it regularly for 2 years. Worked flawlessly. Like all things sometimes manufacturers get a bad run of components etc. Audient is generally a reliable company.

If it’s got a bad part or parts, they should just fail.
I’d stress test it, from cold turn it off and on a silly number of times counting 5-10 seconds in between power ups .
If anything is wonky in surge should stress it. If nothing fails, then leave it on for an extended time : a day or two, but ventilated.

I've had my ASP 800 for about six years with zero issues. Technology can have problems, so anything is a risk.
Like you said, that many channels at a decent price is hard to find. I'd take the risk knowing that there is a warranty. A good power condition might be a good idea.

I think, with the internet, you often only get to hear about the “bad” and not the good. Especially with brands available from major retailers. There are probably 10,000 of those units in the world being used but it takes something to go wrong for someone to go online and complain.
If it checks the boxes of your needs then use it! Don’t let a few peoples bad experience steer you away.

I have mine since 3 years back. Gets used every day. Is switched on for 4-8 hours a day. Not a single issue.
I love the sound and the flexibility for that price.
So ... another positive experience to counter some of the bad.

I was just kinda psyching myself out for a minute. I pretty much sit in my room and record mostly by myself in working on original material. Occasionally, the other two guys I play with come over and we cut some demo tracks to update our song list for getting gigs as a mostly acoustic trio that plays classic country and rock covers. What’s the worse thing that can happen to me? OH NO!! the Audient crapped out and now I have to plug the Scarlett octopre back in till replaced or fixed. Like I said, it’s first world problems.

Well just make certain you don’t plug it in upside down otherwise everything will be out of phase !

I’ve been using one of these as part of a mobile recording rig/utility pres in the studio. Great fast clean sound. No issues at all.

I may end up being that guy. Took it out of the box this afternoon and used two channels to start knocking down some ideas. Worked fine so I powered it off and did some other stuff. Came back after a while and when I powered it back up, one of the channels was crackling and popping so I powered back off and then back on and it stopped. It is not making me feel very confident. I may just send it on back and save up and get the Grace. Hmmmmm.

Give it one more chance, sure your buffer is set correctly ?

Give it one more chance, sure your buffer is set correctly ? I believe so but, I will certainly mess with it some more. I still have a good long time to try it out.

I have an 800 for the last 6-7 years. It has been used to cut radio/voice over, and for quick capture of song ideas. It's in my B room, so not something I turn to every day, but often enough. I interface it with a Lynx Hilo, and it's worked flawlessly. It's a good value, I think.
