I've always used slower optical or mu compressors...but what's the thinking on this? Never tried it...I would assume 4:1 slow attack, medium release to taste? I guess an option is to just go try it...

What settings do you use henge??? Ive been trying WA76 on bass but not quite getting it for me.

4:1, fast attack ( now it has to be noted here that, for some reason, the way I finger the strings ALWAYS generates a a large attack spike. The way you touch the strings will probably be very different so a slower attack my help articulation ) release depends on tempo. Aiming for about 3-5 db reduction but sometimes just squashing the bugger sounds awesome! I was using a UBK Fatso before I got the WA76 and it could never deal with my attack issue. WA76 has no probs in that area.;-)

Lots of folks use 1176 on bass so I've heard. medium-fast attack and variable release to smooth out the thumps. Most of the big boys I've read about use it around 8/12:1..

Mind you, these were UAD plugins, but I had an LA2A on a bass track that never sounded quite right. Switched to the 1176 - instant cure.

While the 4:1 ratio is great if you want to preserve some natural dynamics, combined with moderate att/rel times, you can nail down basses with 8:1 & upper ratios with shorter attack times ( med/longer release time if you want to avoid breathing/pumping )...or completely go ballistic grrrrowl and use the all ratios in though it's more of a wildcard depending on style/texture you're going after

Are we talking tracking or mixing?

I've never used anything but an 1176 on bass..... not any fancy one, just the LN set to 8:1 with med-fast attack and fast release.

I've been using the UAD Bluestripe hitting it pretty hard. Then a MU behind that for even more. Pretty good result.

The best compressor I've used on bass - including the Sta-Level - was the Anamod 660. Just awesome.

1176 never worked for me on bass for the same reason henge mentioned, best compressor I've used for bass was an original la3a, it was like a magic box, I'm hoping/intending that my under construction serpent sa3a(chimera)will come close to that thing!

I brought my own LA-3a into Motown for bass and vocals. I liked it better than our blue stripe 1176 or Fairchild 660 and 666. I was very disappointed by the reissues and am hanging on to my pair of originals with an iron grip.
