All good, I have 4 diffusers as you describe 2 2x4 and 2 2x2, I deepened their frames and have rock wool behind them.
I have been futzing around with the room for too long and the ceilng trap idea had been mentioned in the past. My experience, with room problems persisting tells me you are right, doing the ceiling first would really be the big first fix, then corner bass traps etc.. I’ll price out the ceiling fix, which would also have the benefit of cleaning up each recording done too .
It would be sort of fun, big results for 1-2 days of work just geterdoneson!
Thx everyone.

You may already know this, but when building deep bass traps (12” or more) the medium/light density insulation actually works better than the high density rigid insulation used for broadband panels. The high density stuff resists airflow too much once you get to a certain depth. Roxul Safe n Sound works great for these applications and is sometimes carried at local hardware stores. I was able to get mine from Lowes. Good advice. But better yet is to mix and match them for higher absorption across all freq.
Wow. The advice on this little page is top notch. Except the room EQ approach. That is best left to the very end to repair any monitoring anomalies. I will say, if the internet has done anything it has edumacated the average person on proper sound treatment techniques. Back in the day I was collecting egg cartons!!
Again, Until recently I have been anti EQ. A number of factors have changed that view in the real world. First I’m talking lowend, nothing above 120-200hz. In most modern rooms the budget, space and expertise to solve frequency specific problems just doesn’t exist. One of the other things that really changed my view is that most of the monitoring systems in these rooms are only getting as low as they are via DSP, So why not use it to solve the problem? If it works, it works and it has. Digital EQ can offer filters that are just not possible in the analog world.

I don't really have much to add to this thread--it's been well-covered. But it's great reading and I do appreciate the tone of the discussion.

I think it’s time for a dedicated Studio Build/Acoustics sub category. I love these threads.
Reminds me...I need to organize my pics...been planning to document my own recent studio build out.
