Yes, that is the ultimate but if you use that language, the other mics are "wrong." For a recent example, see the excitement around the Serrano 87. I think there is some place for all of them, although it may be different for every person. At this point, I'm just excited about the "hobby" and looking for cheap ways to build and try new things and learn. A usable studio mic is the ultimate goal but right now I'm just exploring. Not trying to score an Abbey Road gear list spot just yet. I have no interest in anything as a "hobby" except perhaps cutting opals. And I don't believe in "just" exploring. I DO believe in learning for the sake of knowledge. I just wish I could remember it all... But it's not a "hobby". It's serious. Oh I'm serious too! haha. I love this stuff. But these preliminary builds of FET mics will be just that, an exploration to learn like you said. I can't promise a product line or any thing like that. My last couple of mic designs took a few years to get to the finish points. But regarding the word "hobby," you should see these people on the DIY forums and email groups. There is a staggering wealth of information and design going on in these circles, it boggles my mind, and you do sort of wonder about the word "hobby" if not for the fact that maybe most of these people aren't making records, but I can't prove that either.

John E. (and I) believe in the "Lawn Tale Theory". Like all that Mowtown stuff.
IMHO there are various levels of immersion. The Spectrum anywhere from Hobby to Pastime, to full fledged Profe$$ional.
All valid for a given individual... Chris

Chris It's all relative...and therefore subjective a lot of the time. Folks generally find the love of a thing over time. I mean, I guess some people start at the bottom, like it, and stay there; but that's not the part of human nature I'm counting on.

And, back on topic...
I'm seriously considering a stereo (cardioid) set of ELA M 260's. Just don't see much else, other than the Soyuz tube 013, that's remotely similar. I already have the balance of the capsules and the diffuse field spheres. Pricey at north of $2k...
I really like my FET M60 set. Quality kit. Versatile, too. I like them better than the the Beyerdynamic 930, which haven't always met my expectations in certain applications.
So, a stereo set of M 260's...why not?

I was looking at the Telefunken M80 for snare and vocals, although I realize this is the cheap seats of the brand, but that seems like a cool mic.

I think sometimes I 'need' a new dynamic mic kick thing (I really don't), and that the M82 would fit the bill. Maybe they sell a lot of this series. Can't figure they're selling tons of 12's, 47's, 251's.

Both are fantastic drum microphones. The M82 EQ points are fantastic for adjusting to a variety of different sounding kick drums. The M80 is probably the most honest snare drum mic I have and have ever used.

Funny I just got in a new Telefunken ELA M251 with AC701 tube and AKG capsule and their remake of the U47 both for repair.
Here they are beside my real 251 and U47
I can't seem to post pics here no matter

I have to say that in a direct comparison they sound not exact but very good. This ELA M251 has an AKG CK12 in it and a real AC701 so it is hard to call it Telefunken's standard mic. The real question I guess is all these parts are available so how much is it worth to pay for the aesthetics? Many companies build comparable product cheaper.

Tim, how does a 251 with an AC701 compare to a 251 with a 6072? Both original and reissue, please - if I understand correctly, there are reissues with original 701s in them.

Well I have worked on a lot of originals with both tube types because the tube for europe was the AC701. My 251 is an E model with 6072 tube. I prefer the 6072 in this mic. The AC701 models can feel a little less exciting.
Yes this is a reissue with a AC701. Telefunken called it their V series as you can see from the pic. They discontinued this model.
