The best fenders (in my hands) have always been 89 strat plus's something about that year Cheers Wiz
Nope. 1960/61 Strats with the rosewood fingerboard.
My first real electric guitar. Burned up in a fire. Never found another that equals it, didn't appreciate what I had at the time.
It's a real drag when it turns out that your first was actually the best of its kind and you spend the rest of your life chasing that.

A well set up Squier or Epiphone, will kick the ass of the most expensive stuff hanging on the wall at any GC. That said if it’s the LP your chasing, just say used Heritage, real Les Paul’s were made in MI not Nashville and the guys who built those are the guys at Heritage! Funny you mentioned that. I looked up Heritage today and they’re the same freaking price as the Gibsons. They should cost more

I feel the same way about my first electric, a Peavey Raptor

It’s like I was Xmas shopping for the wife who is a huge Kate Spade fan ( she was a KC girl), I find it hilarious that you can pretty much buy the exact same bag at Target without the Kate Spade label for 1/8 the price! Probably made in the exact same factory, but that little label is worth 8 times the price!! It’s all about fashion!

I've had good luck with the Fender 62 American reissues from the 90's. My introduction was my now favorite P-bass I found on clearance at a GC that was seriously unloved with a badly adjusted truss rod and broken/disconnected tone cap. A NOS cap, Optima flatwounds (that have less tension to whatever crap roundwounds they had on it) and some general setup TLC and it's a monster. Ended up finding a Strat from the same series and and year and it's also great, though not quite the magic as the bass. My all time favorite guitar though is a 65 Tele I got to play and record a while back. Apparently that year isn't considered as great as the pre CBS versions but this particular guitar just has that thing. I guess it's like others have said in this thread, some just stick out as magic.

I like it, though I am partial to rosewood also.

It’s not ugly. It’s very classic looking. Ugly would have been settling for one that you thought “looked” better but didn’t inspire you to play it. ETA. This G&L American ASAT Classic was not the Tele type guitar that I “wanted” but it slayed every other tele in the shop. The guys said they would order me whatever I wanted and I said why bother since this had just won in a shootout of about 20. I have grown to love “surf green with a tortie pick guard. Attachments:

Yeah I kind of like that it’s not sunburst.

I like it, though I am partial to rosewood also. In the Player series the dark wood is Pau Ferro, apparently. Just thought that was interesting, a different tree. Rosewood is getting harder to source and sell I guess.

Something about it just works. Funny enough I only have one other instrument out of 20 or so with a maple fretboard besides that one strat, a "P style" bass with an ash body. My #2 strat has a rosewood board and is currently being refinished, it's lying around in parts. So many projects.

another Fender maple neck fan here I'm sure if I had Fender rosewood fretboards I'd love em too but I deliberately went for maple on my newer strat and p bass, and the tele too...
congrats on the new axe it looks very sweet and it's a good one for mods/upgrading if you decide to go that route later on

I've always liked Rosewood much better. Dunno about this "Pao Ferro" stuff.
Maple is OK, but I've always liked rosewood, going back to my '60 Strat and '61 P-Bass.
Rosewood just feels better. To me.

Whats the Cloud product in the background? Those pickups look a little different to the standard ones. Do you know what they are? Congrats on your new toy.

Pao Ferro is a fine fretboard material. A decent rosewood substitute

I'm gonna admit it. I prefer maple because it shows the wear from the playing more. I love it when a fret board shows the play wear in certain commonly played spots / keys.

On Gibsons, rosewood, on Fender's, maple. I've had many rosewood Tele's and Strats, including a 51' Esquire. The maple has a brighter snap to it that says "Tele" to me. Granted, Steve Croper sounded quite "Tele" with his rosewood neck, but maple sounds a bit better to me.

Whatever you get , try to get it used. You probobly won't keep your first amp forever, and their is nothing wrong with used gear. Often, you can get more for less. And when it comes to guitars, get something that sounds good and plays nice, not what looks the best. I got my paul stanley apocolypse pro, which is all black and red and pointy. I'm not an evil person, but for $175 I got a set neck, Duncan Designed Pickups, Grover Tuners, and a quality guitar. By the way, it was used. If you are considering a new one, be sure to read these bestelectricguitars.reviewsWhat I'm trying to tell you is two things- 1. Used IS worth it 2. Go for functionability and quality, not looks. Good Luck!

I've got an Epiphone Les Paul "Standard Pro". I think it's got quite a lot of bang for the buck. Plays well, good neck, nice combination of tones. It's also got tapped pickups which opens up another set of sounds that don't show up in most of your Gibson models. Some people tend to replace pickups with high-output jobs. Depending on the sounds you want, perhaps you'll do that. But unless you're into fuzzy ear-bleeding sounds, I can't see any reason for that mod. Mine is a flexible and quite capable instrument. Sort of like Gibson used to make ;-)
