This is specifically for the MXL V67n SDC with the transformer. www.proaudiostar.com/mxl-v67n.html#infoAnyone have one of these laying around that they wouldn't mind shipping to me for a week or two so I can do some comparisons? I'm willing to pay shipping both ways. Alternatively, I would buy yours for $50 or so shipped if you want to unload. Also, if you do have one or have used one, what are your thoughts.

So this is a small condenser? I was just thinking about getting an MXL V69 LDC to have Shannon put another cap in. Really wanted see just how much difference the capsule makes.

I've actually never used an MXL, really only because they're so cheap and everyone bashes them. I have an MXL V250 laying around that I grabbed for $50 new maybe a year ago, just to have as an extra laying around, but have yet to plug it in. Just looked and the V250 is on sale for $50 again. musiciansfriend.com/condenser-microphones/mxl-v250-condenser-microphone Sorry...going off topic on my own thread. Back to the V67n.

John, you'd do much better buying a Chinese tube LDC mic like this one which has a very nice simple plate-follower circuit, dual bobbin transformer, Wima caps and the same power supply/7-pin cable that Ben Sneesby sells with his Studio Series tube mics...these come from the same factory that make KEL Audio mics...a better capsule and NOS tube are in order: www.ebay.com/itm/131130115826

Well, the capsule would be totally replaced. And honestly, I wouldn't spend that much on the mic. Maybe even try a Blue Bluebird which is actually a surprisingly good mic in its own.

Maybe even try a Blue Bluebird which is actually a surprisingly good mic in its own. ...it would seem to me to be somewhat inequitable to consider spending 4-5 times the cost of donor the mic to replace the capsule...I think you may be overestimating the impact of the capsule in the entire design/build quality of the donor mic...clearly the $1400 Miktek CV4 with an AMI BV8 tranny, a well executed EF800 based circuit was a platform worthy of a better capsule...not sure a $300 Bluebird is...sometimes, in these decent inexpensive mics, there is a cost/quality equation that already balances the best of both ends, and the cost to improve from there is surprisingly inefficient and excessive...just my two cents...

I think you're underestimating the capsule.

The V69 is allegedly a clone of the Joe Meek JM47 - which I have used and I thought was a very nice mic for guitar cab and vocal. Very smooth, very usable - especially for the money.

I think you're underestimating the capsule. ...maybe spend a bit more time on the DIY forums, where just about every capsule available (Thiersch, Neumann, Peluso, Tim Campbell, Beesneez, Heiserman, ADK Custom, Dale, and all the Chinese OEMs), outside of Shannon's, are implemented in similar circuits with surprisingly variable outcomes, often not linked to the capsule's cost or source... ...yes, Shannon's work may be exceptional, but putting a completely blueprinted, turbocharged high-performance engine in a $16,000 Hyundai does not make a Ferrari...there are much more variables in the equation...but I'd be interested in hearing the outcome (on your dollar)... ;-)

The MXLv250 is a side address SDC. It's the same as the MXL603, etc, of which the V67 is just the 603 with a transformer. Pretty much all MXL mics are the same mic over and over, just in different bodies to make them look different.

It's not just a capsule change - it's the tweaking or "tuning" of the capsule. I'm interested in seeing if we could make one of these really cheap mics into something very usable. I wouldn't expect it to be a U87, or U67 - but something very pleasing and usable. Maybe you're right - maybe it's best to go with something like a Mojave...with quality parts. Or even the Miktek CV3...
