I've got a Triad A9J input transformer that I bought to make a DI but then ended up getting an A12J box made.
How hard is it to make a simple tube pre?

Somewhere on the net there is a One-bottle pre by New York Dave. That’s a nice little project, not too bad as long as you’re careful and use good judgment with high voltage. Folks here can help you with a BOM and so on.

Yeah that's a good one. A Gates SA-70 would not be hard to do point to point, the originals are built on the tube sockets. Then you have a lot of the Coil CA-70 sound and behavior. Like the various NewYorkDave projects, you can get away with an Edcor 15K:600 for $10-12 if you like the sound of it fine.

Thanks for the input! Those both look like great ideas. I have Coil CA70’s here so that might be interesting to compare.
I also remembered I have a an old Jensen JE-123-C from a box of parts someone gave me. If I could incorporate that it would be a fairly affordable project. I think a friend of mine has an old piece of test gear I could probably use as an enclosure. Time to do some reading!
