I typically use the Softube TubeTech channel for most of the Pultec type EQs I need... but now this gets me wondering if it might be even better. How many Pultec emulations do I need? Maybe just one more. The low end on the Softube is massive and I can't see anything improving on it. The top end could be a little smoother. I like the PSP version better for the high end, but sadly the low is pretty soft and unusable. Now I need to decide if I want to spend another $100 on a plugin I thought I already had covered.

so is the rule tec the „best“ pultec on the market right now? its on sale, i could get it rather cheap. For my taste, it's a peer to the MKII UAD. Those two are the best I've heard ITB. I haven't compared them directly, just going off memory from years on UAD. By the time Rule Tec came around, I was off the UAD platform.

ok, bought it after some more testing. the waves puigtec doesn‘t do the boost and cutting correctly with subtle amounts like 1-2. the rule tec does what it has to do and so it seems less problematic to me. i like plugins that „simply work“ like they are supposed to.
in fact i bought 3 of the rule tecs, so i can use them on kick and on the mixbus ... ;-)

IMO, the Rule Tec has the best high end of any Pultec emu. Actually, I'd say it's better most other EQs in general, except for maybe Sie-Q. The HF boost has a really unique texture and is smooth as all get out. Definitely one of the most convincing analog plugins I've used, even more so than the UAD. It has become the first thing I reach for when I need to brighten a lead vocal.

Then I put my hardware pultec on and push the highs and get a little depressed how good it is vs all the plugs still. But that rule tec aint too far off. Also check out the new SonEQ-2 from Sonimus. With oversampling on, the top is nice.

There was a nice fellow who did a blind A/B/C with rule tec, UAD, and a real HW pultec, for Youtube.
The interesting thing was the UAD was indistinguishable in his particular test. Rule Tec is excellent, but I thought that was interesting.
Also, if anyone has a $25 voucher at Plugin Alliance, you could get SSL 9000 J, or Bettermaker EQ for $25 or $15 respectively.
The Bettermaker is a desert island "clean, with extras" Pultec for me. Rule tec or UAD will do the vintage, Bettermaker the modern.

There is a very big hardware/software test with clips on sweetwaters site I think and the plugs just didn't quite do it in those tests... hm.

It did really well in those blind listens! That's back around when I purchased Rule Tec. Somebody on "the other" site added a bunch of plugins in a thread about it, using the same clips as sweetwater. I agree with you, a lot of the software shone poorly in that particular shootout. The hardware seemed to have a clear team advantage.

The other hardware didn't do it either. Some plugs beat some of the other pieces I've heard. But that pulse tech was straight up magic without even touching the knobs.

The Sweetwater test was almost comically flawed because the levels were so far off. You'll never guess which ones were louder!
