Went to try this last night but got stuck in the "gotta update waves to install these other plugins and... Wait, where did my old waves plugins go?" loop before I could even try this one because now only one of my programs can see some of the waves plugs, but not all of them.
Seems that the versions of my old plugs were one version too old to work with ANY of the legacy installers, AND they don't work with their new V10 ecosystem either.. So they know that you'll lose your old plugs when installing your new ones, and they have a FAQ item for "how to install your legacy plugs after installing V10 plugs" but their legacy installers only go back a couple versions so if you haven't "upgraded" constantly, you're S.O.L..
Luckily I still had my old plugin DLLs copied and I'm able to get one program to see them, but not the DAW.
And people are like "I don't understand why people complain about this stuff".. Well it's because I just got royally screwed by a company who makes it very hard on you to keep using the things you paid for by forcing you to upgrade to incompatible versions and offer no upgrade path nor help other than "just reinstall it" while they know that you can't because they don't offer installers for the version that you need to reinstall.
Anyway, at least this Ruletec is just a license file and not this convoluted bullshit that Waves uses. I'll try to check it out in the next couple days, but my latest session is FULL of "can't load ____ plugin"..

Well said svart. I avoid this stuff like the plague. I had tried, but had gotten used to using some special plugs for certain things and now that I've bought into more than a handful of them, it's a matter of wanting what I paid for to be available rather than absolutely needing them. I had contemplated just buying the newer versions so I can get back to work, but I'm a jerk and I don't want to reward them for making my job harder and I'll give it one more try to get things recognized again.

I have a friend who bought some waves bundles and and then literally just had to get cracked versions because of these kinds of issues.

Lucky me I made my waves experience very early and I discovered that their business model is not what I need.
I never bought anything by them again.

I found in all cases alternative plug ins which very often outsmart the Waves technology.

So far, I have not been bitten by Waves Central. I think I'm pretty lucky. Maybe it's because I bought all I wanted right around the time version 10 was being released. I did the upgrades during the first year of use and have not touched them since. I kind of worry when the next updates come out, but really, I only use a handful of their plugins, though I own dozens.

I got mine to work, but with some effort. I had copies of the original 9.2 dll files, including the 9.2 shell files. Apparently waves doesn't directly use the vst .dll files, but uses a shell around them, I'm guessing that's how they can do the license verification or something.
I had to move the shells to new folders and then the old 9.2 vsts would work.
I'm not sure how, or why, this is the case, but the originals were still where I installed them. I'm guessing the new central station deletes the paths to the old files, or covers them up somehow because I just couldn't see them in the old folders.
Now I'm back running with 9.2 plugs and the new V10 plugs at the same time.
What a pain.

Have anyone (apart from OP) compared this with any hardware pultec/clones?

Have anyone (apart from OP) compared this with any hardware pultec/clones? There's a blind comparison thread on the purple site that includes hardware and other emus. FWIW, RuleTec was in the top 2-3 for me. It's a no-brainer at the current price, IMO.

Its another great example how far software can go.
Today I was also blown away how far the Slate Distressor goes in oversampling mode.
The reason why I get another new Mac with Vienna as audio server - more power for plug ins.

I listened to several demos and comparisons and walked away happy enough with the Softibe plugs that I own. I think they sound good.

I bought the Rule tec a month ago or so from recommendations in this thread, and I’ve used it on 2bus on all of my mixes since then. The reason I asked about hw comparisons is that I’ve found the plugin so good that I’m starting to think that I should stop saving up for two pultec clones and just be happy with the plugin. Not sure that my ears are even good or trained enough to appreciate what a pair of real units bring.

If you are happy with your mixes, I agree that picking up the tab for an RGO beer and wings night is a much better way to spend your dough !!

I also found a mix bus plug in replacement which made me happy in blind AB. It's the True Iron + the DDMF Neve EQ thing.

So the DDMF is that good even if it’s an old plug? I have to try it, thanks for the recommendation!

Overlooked by too many, a simple truth.
IMO it sounds like hardware and the artifacts do act like hardware too. I love that thing to death....

Well crap, now I demoed it for an hour and had to buy it. This was what I was looking for as a replacement for the Slate Custom EQ. Thanks!

Yeah the Slate Custom EQ is not bad but this one sounds more 3 dimensional to my ears!?

Got a general Pultec EQP-1 question. Does the bandwidth control act only on the highs? I tend to keep it on the broad side for treble boosting. How would it be used if set to narrow?

Yes, it's for treble only.
