Hey so matt@IAA kindly sent me one of his QPP quad mic pres to check out. I've been so backed up with stuff this summer that I only just unboxed it and took it for a spin. It's too early for me to make any sweeping conclusions but I can say I'm impressed. It's built like a friggin' tank and I love the classic, simple aesthetic. Here's a clip of it on acoustic guitar and vocal. This is my MK67 through the QPP into Symphony MKII. The vocal is also being leveled a bit by the Stam ADG (Rev A). drive.google.com/file/d/1V5ccYdqK4dOeGSkkiRxBDd5IAQOS4B9U/view?usp=sharingAttachments:

Awesome singing man. Your voice reminds me Cody Cross from Cross Canadian Ragweed.

Awesome singing man. Your voice reminds me Cody Cross from Cross Canadian Ragweed. Are these the same preamps that are in the CS2?

Awesome singing man. Your voice reminds me Cody Cross from Cross Canadian Ragweed. Are these the same preamps that are in the CS2? Yes-kinda-no. Same basic schematic but different input transformer, op amp, and output transformer. The CS2 you played with was built as a quad eight design, with Cinemag Quad Eight input and output transformers and an IAA AM10 op amp. This has a Jensen input transformer, a custom-wound Cinemag output, and the IAA M2 op amp.

I'm going to do a comparison with the QPP and my trusty Great River MP-2NV this weekend. I'll post the files here.

Man, tuff call At first I preferred the GR, little more body and mid push, but then I started to prefer the QPP linearity I'd happy with either: think I'd use the GR on vox and the QPP on the guitar. Always a pleasure hearing a Ragan Millar track: love that band !

matt@IAA with Jensons and Cinemag: going for clean and presence? I think of input transformers are more about maintaining fidelity and bandwidth, output more about tone. Those Jensen inputs are just amazing at doing their job. I came close to picking an old Reichenbach design but I settled on the Jensen with the M2 op amp and the Reichenbach with the Neumann style. The output I developed with Cinemag going for a particular tone. I wanted a certain kind of sound, so I went with a steel core and the construction to get some nice low THD that extended up into the mids a bit. Its somewhere between a Quad Eight output (rich, almost sweet) and an API 2503 (mid forward and aggressive).

I liked the Great River better. More consistent clarity, the low mids were less muddy. To each his own.

I like them both for different things. The GR is sort of more contained, sonic footprint wise. It's more forward in the mids. Those can be good things. The QPP is just buttery smooth and the mids are relaxed. I hear it as a velvety sort of extra non-fatiguing signature. Which is a really nice starting point when you know you're gonna compress and EQ and limit things up. I, of course, like the Great River, it's been my go-to for several years. But I'm really impressed with the QPP. And it's built like a tank, everything feels super chunky and solid. And you get 4 channels. It's a great piece IMO.

Agreed, great value, but a two pre unit would be nice as well!

Agreed, great value, but a two pre unit would be nice as well! Send me a PM or email through the site, we can figure something out. It’s a lot easier to go from four to two than the other way around.

All good, currently just a suggestion, but I would think other clients might like a 2 channel option too ?

The IAA seems to emphasize the bass, where the Great River seems to emphasize a little treble lift. I guess the GR sounded a little more appropriate, or pre-mixed, on this track to me. Clarity and definition almost always wins for me in comparisons. That said, they both sound good.

The channel strip EQ is that inductor based? No, it is RC - two stage peaking Baxandall I suppose would be the name for it.

Love that it includes a mute button. Anyone who mikes up stuff in the same room appreciates that feature.

Love the open, wide, clear quality of the IAA Pre in all examples. Sounds big. Yet still has some nice mojo and color going on. Great job as always, matt@IAA !!
