The CV-12 is really a fairly typical Chinese mod and you can equal that at a much lower price. The BV-12 is a different story though. It's a combo of the BV-1 and another design, possibly the CV, but I'm not sure. The CV-12 is OK, not great, don't know if it's able to be modded though. The BV-12 sounded really, really good when I listened at this year's AES show. Unfortunately, I was listening on headphones in a noisy convention, so I wished I could hear it at home.

I'm bumping this thread guys as I would like to add a C12 to my mic collection. Is Chungers Kit, an Apex body, and Tim Campbell's capsule still the way to go?

Anyone heard the Avantone CV-12? LOOKS LIKE BUTTER!!! ... SOUNDS LIKE MARGARINE!!! (as does it's big brother, the BV-12)
foxaudioresearch.ca/BV-12Review.htm
BTW, it is based on the Apex 460, but with some poorly implemented modifications...the much superior option is the STELLAR CM-5 (same mic as the Advanced Audio CM-12 at half the price...did i mention, "the same"?): www.stellarmicdesign.com/
...the CM-5 is not a C12 clone by any means...it's a modified/upgraded version of the Apex 460...upgrades include metal-film capacitors, improved cathode-follower implementation (as per Dave Thomas of AA), dual-bobbin T14-type transformer, 34mm 6-micron edge-terminated C12-style capsule, and EH 6072A tube...the end product leans a bit more towards the ELAM 251 than C12...great mic for the money, but not to be confused with the MataChung C12...

I think this is the best option aside from getting mic rehab to dial your capsule in, the problem is finding a C12 capsule thats got accurate backplates that you're willing to tear the skin off. As far as the Matachung C12 kit, it's got tremendous support over at GDIY, so you're all but guaranteed success in your build.

I just built my first matachung kit and as soon as I heard it in person I thought "THATS what I remember a c12 sounding like!" Has that nice top end sizzle without being harsh and a round low end. I tried to get on the list for a TC capsule for over 8 months and finally gave up.
