The finest microphone I've ever had the pleasure of using was an original C12. At the time I didn't pay close attention to these things, so it could have been a Telefunken or an AKG, I suspect AKG, it had a golden hue. I've seen and heard about many clones, but can't seem to find consensus, a shootout, or a definitive answer to the question, which C12 clone is considered the best. I bought the Blackspade U17, (essentially, a Telefunken AK47 mk. II), mainly because I could hear the family resemblance, even though they are obviously different.
So, what do you guys like in C12 clones?
I'd love to know which one is considered the best , and which one is the best bang for little bucks.

here is an exact replica of the akg c12 circuit, the alctron ht11a is about as close as a reasonably priced donor mike body and psu case can be, put a tim campbell capsule in this, and studio 939 c12 headbasket, and you will be blown away! it sounds stupid good my friend! www.groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=51377.0

Hey thanks Tony. I've gotta run now, but I'll take a closer look at that link later on tonight. I noticed a link to a site with many parts available. Can you save me a little time and suggest the best set of components I'd need to get it done, hopefully under $500, but preferably, under $300. My Blackspade can be upgraded with a Thiersch capsule for around $650. I'd love to do that, but at that price, it 's not easy figuring out if I'd be better served keeping the U17 as is, and adding another mic to the family. Any suggestions, insights and opinions are welcomed.

Great capsules are a must and are not cheap. Tim makes an amazing c12 capsule. I have one in my AA CM12se and it really is great. I think the best bang for buck is Chunger's C12 kit with a great capsule.

Martin, see six posts up, counting this one for the link, Chungers thread has links to all necessary parts, and yes, this is a bitchn mic, and dans also right(again) Tim campbell CT12 capsule is unreal good, i got 2 of them. Tim has a looooooong waiting list though, he doesn't make you pay until you come to the top of the queue and he's ready to send em.

Thanks Jim, that does look tasty. I sent a note to Tim Campbell asking for some info and details on his mods. I'll more than likely do this in the late fall. In the summer, I'm out of work and can only spend on essentials.

Martin, Tim Campbell makes C12 replica condenser capsules, he does not do mods, oh, and he takes forever to get back to you, you would simply place an order with him, and wait, he's golden. Chunger/matador are the men behind the c12 replica, via the above link. read the beginning of that thread should clarify things hope this helps

Chunger is a super hero! I can't imagine doing my LC53A build without his photographic walkthrough.

Do you guys know approximately how much Tim Campbell's capsules sell for? I took a look at his home page, did the calculations, and it seems to be $350, am I wrong?

Tims an artist for sure.

That number sounds like the one I came up with last time I did the monetary conversion. I have always wondered if an old AKG 414 B-ULS would benefit from one of those C-12 replica capsules.

Oh damn. I've got an AA CM12 and it sounds like one of those capsules would light it up. Hmm. Must check em out.

I put a TC capsule in a rode K2 that i modded the heck out of, it was really nice before the capsule, and amazing after the install. The first thing i notice when i'm checking out a mic, is mouth noises, you know, lip smacks, tongue noise? If the mic makes that stuff sound pretty, you know possibly on to something, the k2/TC capsule sounds amazing IMO

no that is the price most likely plus shipping, you could most likely get your capsule replaced with a campbell one
essentially there are two options, the microphone parts aphex 460 mod is abut $4-500 USD or $600 if you get the new ati transformer like the original, ( including buying a new aphex 460)
chunger is roughly a grand with the campbell capsule ( also including buying the new aphex 460 donor mike)
these are the sites cat 5 has told us about
