there seems to be a few guys from group diy here so I was wondering has anyone used the studio ing ma1 preamp or heard it?
it is said to be germanium based. I'm wondering where it sits sound wise on the canvas.
my comparisons would be vp28, lola, daking, ma-5, sytek, soundcraft,
I've got a bunch of Jensen and mci output transformers I'd probably stuff into it.
in the same price point is the jlm ba500 and I've already got some of joes input transformers.

I've got 4 of them. I'm using the CAPI input and output transformers. On two of them I removed the D.I. and did the output trim mod. Out of the above pres I only have the VP28s to compare them to, and haven't heard the soundcraft. I haven't use them much, but on initial testing they do sound different than the VP28s. More of a closed, almost self compressing, round, 1970's transformer console sound. Slower transients, different than the above pres. Would be a good addition.

thanks winetree.
I was thinking I'd do the output trim mod as well if I got them. did the output trim add much tone?

was also wondering in the scheme of things. how do these compare to premaps like the rca germs, wsw etc. is the rounded compressed tone typical of germ pres or just this design

I was gone for the weekend so I couldn't answer. I haven't heard the R.C.As , etc, but I think the round compressed sound is typical of germ pres. I have 2 completed Jensamps. They distort and make loud popping noise when switched. I have put many, many hours going over them and even replaced parts and transistors without any luck. I have basically given up on them. I've posted this on the groupdiy site. Good luck with yours, I hope you don't have the same problems. The MA1s were first try winners.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll see how i fair. I hope it doesn't pop and click.
if it does i'll try the ma-1 also at some point.

has been a while but I built a jensamp.
now I just need to finish off the power supply kits and buy a case and I'm good to go.
of course at this stage although it looks very pretty I am yet to test it due to lack of power supply. not long to go now.
