So I’ve been tossing around the idea of picking up a mandolin and learning to play for a while now. I don’t currently play, but the hope would be that down the road I would be able to accompany myself during live performances of the old Italian and Neapolitan songs I frequently perform and use it from some studio recordings as well. I have a friend I work with that can play mandolin on my recordings, but doesn’t own one.
I’m just not sure where to start looking. I don’t want to spend a ton of money on one, but I also don’t want a crappy one that won’t sound good in performance or on record. I think I’d most likely look at and modern A body as opposed to an F Body or Neapolitan mandolin. It think it will be easier for performance, etc. Not sure about the sound hole though. I think some come with a built in pick up.
Anyway, any brands or specific mandolin recommendations? Tips? Thoughts? A body vs F body?
