I picked up the mixer tonight. I think I can say I now know what the "brown sound" is. the thing sounds like pure 1970's. I love it!! could have also been the funk music the guy I bought it off was playing through it but none the less I'd say that when people say they want vintage sound this is the sound they mean.
it's not open and detailed like my other gear but it oozes style and has a groove. although, i've not done a full test with faders up it seemed fairly quiet. I pushed one of the channel faders to full and didn't hear anything I shouldn't.
it is in mint condition. I mean not a mark. unbelievable.
it has 12 transformer coupled mic/line inputs (not looked inside yet though) 3 aux busses 4 group busses direct outs on all channels and groups inserts on all channels and groups stereo out, headphone out, monitor out 2 effects returns switchable vu meters pre and post fade sends channel and buss solo switching channel clip led 100mm faders 3 band eq with +/- 18db, 50hz shelf, 15khz shelf and variable mid
I believe the guts are 16.5v +/- so I guess that means I have a lot of options with mods....
down sides,
not a huge amount of gain on the preamps, switchable phantom power is to all channels at once or no channels, eq cannot be bypassed, no phase switch,

insert returns are post gain stage, pre eq/fader stage, so I can effectively run the console as a 30 channel board if needed.

is there a way I can upload images direct to this site? the image already posted was a random from the internet. here is another random from the internet. this is the model I have. I am guessing the version 1. there is a version 2 floating around as well with more switching options plus channel mutes. there is also an 8 channel tapco 8e side car that can be added via the rear trs routing. got me thinking a pm1000 sidecar might be useful as well.

Use Dropbox to host your images.
The BBC have a rule of "Phantom always on". I wouldn't be worried by having to have global phantom!

cheers jazznoise.
the desk is from an era when mics had transformers on the outputs or at least had their own power supplies. the manual goes into some detail as well about this.
the last part of the manual is a good read because it talks about how to record bands live to minimal tracks, possible setups etc to allow post session work. has given me some ideas at least.
