I would call myself a mediocre singer...funny thing I am getting better with age.
I made a strange observation. Sometimes I decide that a take is good enough even if a tone jumps, or I have not reached a note properly.
If I now use hardware compression it helps to not focus on the mistakes anymore, it smoothed out the performance
If I try the same with a software compressors it focuses a lot on the mistakes.
I asked my mentor, and he said he made this experience as well with mediocre singers.
I still doubt myself and my mentor - just because it's a strange thing.

That is odd. I've found compression to exaggerate faults, flaws, weaknesses what have you . . .

Maybe, mrholmes, you're listening for the sound more than the performance?

That's what I thought as well, but this should make come up the mistakes again - if I focus on them. My guesswork is that the hardware changes the envelope and that helps for a reason I don't know.

I love working with a compressor while singing. It is the thing I miss most about selling my LA2A and 1176. The UA LA2A stretched with my voice in a very fun and pleasant way. It's like a Tango with the compressor.
