would the cleanest sounding version of these pres be the 312 with the hardy opamps? how about biggest lowened, vp25? I'm not sure. I think the VP25/VP26 is pretty clean with the stock opamps. The 312 is the same circuit minus a few modern pieces like AC coupling so the pots don't get scratchy over time. Honestly there's not much difference in overall tone though. I have 4 of the VP26 built like 312s but I also have 4 of the VP25s too and don't notice that much difference. thanks, that's kind of what I figured. I have so many opampa with no home lol

Agreed - at least on the VP26's being great. I haven't built any others yet, but that's mostly as I've been really satisfied with their sound and flexibility of usage. That being said, I do think about adding a VP26 with a DI jack on the front panel, or the VP28 from time to time.

I'll put in a plug for the CAPI VP312 as well as the CA-0252 and the GAR AM-10. I used Cinemag transformers in mine. Love these things, workhorses.
The Five Fish NK-72DI is also really good, with the GAR OA-10 op amps (Neumann style). Darker and smoother than the CAPI, but equally usefull. Love those Carnhill transformers.
SCA is back in business too. I used to rely heavily on their N72.
