DIYRE EQP5. very affordable, super easy to build. Sounds amazing. Get the vintage output. Also easy to modify.
CAPI stuff. Can't go wrong with any of it I think. I can't wait to build some of the eqs but have done some mic pressed and the ML2. Good stuff. The SumBus is on my list too.
I'm going to to some AML stuff next. The ez1073 and the 2254 compressor which looks easily tweaked (att/release times). Heard great things about amls stuff.
I also have 3 DIY Racked kits to build and some Serpent Audio ones which aren't really a thing anymore.
Hairballs stuff is good too. I want a pair of Lola's. I helped a local college build some of the copper mic pres and haven't worked on them but they seem super cool and interesting. I've built two 1176 500s from them too and they sound good.

Big second on the DIYre EQP5.
Does some instant solidifying and sweetening of the soundstage on mixbus. Also kickass on individual instruments. Change transformers and op amps down the road if you want tonal differences.

The OL5 compressor from DIYRE is cool too actually too. Its an opto compressor but not really like an la2/3a vibe as it's based on the la4a. It's not a thick sounding but super cool to use

A D.I.Y. Kit worth building is kit that's needed and used.

i was thinking more of kits that are stand out bits of gear.
like the hairball lola, the capi vp28, jlm la500a
doesn't have to be 500 series

The Lola is really nice. Being able to use it as a line amp is a bonus. I'd also suggest Hairball's Copper. I have 2 of each. Copper is an easier build. Neither are that hard though (I did botch one op amp on a Lola). The Copper has a cool character. At some point I plan on having a rack full of them and not worrying about preamps anymore.
The CAPI stuff is nice too. I have 2 of the 553f and LC25 over here. Both relatively simple builds. I don't think I could live without the LC25 at this point. It's THE bass EQ I've always wanted. I need like 8 more of them. 553f is a low key killer too.

I've built and use 2 lolas. really really like the lola. in capi land I was using 2 vp28's which were my favourite to pt on the master buss and mix into.
whilst I haven't used them yet I've got an aml1081 to build. hoping that does the neve thing sorta.

I did DR-ZEN2 as my first project and I absolutely love it. It wasn't easy, but I learned a lot and I am looking forward to my next builds :-)
Next one I am doing is DR_NEQ3D.

Two VP312's, which were pretty easy and sound great. Two VP28's, which were fucking hard (next time I'll just by the damn opamps assembled) and they sound awesome. Two Lola's, which sounded kind boring to me. I know people love em, but I just don't get the hype. I guess I like colored preamps. Build was pretty straightforward, but again, not worth it to build the opamps. Currently working on the DR-PQ8, which is a monster project. Hopefully I'll finish by the end of the year.

Op amps are indeed a pain, especially when you're building 8-16 of em at any given time! I build everything under the sun CAPI-wise and I too was underwhelmed by the lola- nothing touches the 28's.

I had all the Hairball pres here for demoing and found them all underwhelming. Love their 1176s though.

After building/using one of their 1176s, I was considering selling off my more expensive preamps and going all Hairball. After trying them out I couldn’t get back to my DMA73 fast enough. I just didn’t like them. The Lola was my fav of the Hairball stuff but I didn’t really dig it.

Analog Allstars EQP-1S5, if you can get it. Expanded SS 500 series Pultec, curves spot-on with originals, easy fast assembly.

They still run a monthly ad, sometimes they apparently answer messages. groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=46920.0

CAPI is a must. VP28 at the top of that list. DIYRE is great. Their Pultec and DI Box (with cinemag) are my favs. Microphoneparts.com never personally did, but every example I've heard has been very decent for the price.

I had all the Hairball pres here for demoing and found them all underwhelming. Love their 1176s though. What opamps did you have in them? My jazz clients love the Lola’s with the hardy amps in them. I think I’ve built about 15 if them for their home setups. I’ve got a pair with the ba-512 opamps and love them. Different strokes I guess!

Anyone else built the VP26 pre's? Did a pair of those years ago and also assembled a set of gar2520 as well as a set of 1731 opamps to switch out for different colours.

I think the VP25/VP26 is pretty clean with the stock opamps. The 312 is the same circuit minus a few modern pieces like AC coupling so the pots don't get scratchy over time. Honestly there's not much difference in overall tone though. I have 4 of the VP26 built like 312s but I also have 4 of the VP25s too and don't notice that much difference.
