My 500 series units didn't have an output transformer...so what's that thing on the right of this pic in the stereo 19" unit? Looks like an output transformer to me...wouldn't this make them sound different?

Does the unit have EQ? It looks more like inductor size, you'd expect an output transformer to be much larger if it has any headroom.

Probably an EQ inductor then.

And it would be on the stereo unit and not the 500?

And it would be on the stereo unit and not the 500? Looking at this pic, is it present under that hook/loop that the cabling runs through?

The one I used in the '70s only had an input transformer.

Probably an EQ inductor then. My first guess as well based on size and features.

The Helios preamp modules (not 500 series) and the Vintage King rack and power supply they sell for them are as expensive as the AMS Neve stuff if not more. I've never made the jump, the price tag just scared me.

some vintage of preamps weren't designed to work outside a desk so they didnt have output transformers until you got to the mix buss or aux sends.
sometimes the next inline was the tranaformer at the input of the eq.
one reason why the purests dont buy into clones.

Yea i get ur point with purists but it's hard for some people like myself to stretch the budget. Who wouldn't like to own the originals but can sacrifice that 8-10‰ of quality with 1/4 of the price of clones, as long its 90% there
