Some good points in the vid. I would have gone a step further, and rather than just matching proximity, I would have just put the mic where it sounds best for that source. Perhaps that is what this is showing. As long as the video is showing where the mic was placed to get the sound, it paints a clear picture. It's all subjective anyway =)
I could get away with using most any of the mics in this for a guitar part like that.
Switch to something like a single mic drums, piano, or a cello, and you'll likely form stronger opinions/hear more variance.
And then there's this whole bag of "but if you only changed this" about some of the mics, that comes from working on/repairing them ( I'm looking at you, SK46!)
Yay! Ribbon mics!

I'm trippin' on the off-axis tilt too.....it's not a 57.....and, that's the more severe angle to tilt away from.

Not surprisingly, in context, my two favorite ribbon mics of all time 77 and 121 are my absolute favorites, in that order . .. but very surprised by the Octava ML16, which sounded great in context and isolation!! But not in isolation, which is why it's always important to listen in context!
The AEA N22 sounds beautiful, full and perfect on it's own. But in context, the drums and bass are trying to eat it.
And of course, we all hear things differently and pick different favorites - which is a beautiful thing!
Thank you so much for sharing, Vincent, and great job by Ryan Earnhart at Creative Sound Labs.

Fun video to watch. I have two Cascade Fatheads and was hoping he'd include those. Ever since LordAlvin showed that post on the AEA R92 I have been considering either that or other ribbons for my tom mics!
Honestly, with the drums I heard very little difference in most all of them to the point I felt it mattered. Some had more high end detail. Maybe some fuller, but nothing to drastic that I'd think twice about trade something out.
But without the drum tracks it was interesting how different they sounded. I think this sort of distorted guitar track isn't offering the best picture of which mic to learn towards.
What is supposed to be happening with the off axis positioning? I really haven't experimented much with that because I"m usually placing the Fatheads up fairly close to the amp and trying not to get bleed from other sources in my small space.
I have only seen this dude wearing a doo rag and dreadlocks. I have a theory they all come off when the camera is not there and he's bald. LOL

BTW, I invited Ryan Earnhart to come and join us here. I hope he does. I’ve really enjoyed his videos over the last few years. He likes experimenting with things and showing how he did it.

Yes, I can't say he's made a video where I didn't learn something useful. Good drummer too!

Ryan is a buddy of mine, I am proud to say. Love his work. I was watching his videos for years until I realized he lives really close to me, it was a weird moment.
I thought the 44 and the little SK46 were some of the best. Really liked the R88. 121 kind of generic but it works.
I've done the whole cheap mic mod thing and I have R40, R80, and Apex 205 here they are all surprising performers.

Still love my R121. I do have the Bumblebee RM6 now and it's a different animal. Very, very bassy with almost scooped mids make it sound super hi-fi on close sources. It's almost the opposite of the R121 in terms of tonality.

That N22 sounds so good in context.
