I am trying out the new logic 10.4.5 update
The biggest change for me is the upgraded De Esser, De Esser 2.
It has a sort of "dynamic" mode called ... relative
Its probably the best De Esser I have ever used, its really easy and sounds great.
So if you are upgrading logic make sure to check it out.
It sounds better upon first usage than FFilter's and Eosis. Which is saying something
Cheers

Just updated and gave it a try on my current mix. It's pretty fantastic. And like wiz said, Relative mode is the way to go. It didn't take long for me to decide to replace Eiosis with it on my vocal. I will miss the very cool Eiosis spectrum graphics. Now I'll have to use my ears, damn it! Also, I was thinking that "Range" selections should offer a variable Q knob. On the other hand, the two preset buttons seem to be adequate for the job. Bottom Line: The Logic DeEsser sounds better and was actually easier for me to dial in. Hmm.. one more reason to consider cancelling my Everything Bundle subscription. Now I'm down to about 2 or 3 Slate plugins that I still rely on.

I had not even heard there was an update. Will have to check this out. Yup, in store 2 days ago: pumped up to use the increased cpu power of the new Apple computers.

I'm still on Sierra, so it never pushed the update to me. Investigating if I want to upgrade the OS now. I had heard a lot of painful stories about High Sierra and even more for Mojave, so I've been content to stay thus far.

I have a 2017 iMac running High Sierra (with no problems, at least none that a restart hasn't fixed) and if I had to guess, this update actually runs more efficiently. The CPU usage meter looks a tad more comfortable with the entire project playing. Also I just did a real-time bounce and the graphics on the open plugs and mixer were MUCH less sluggish.

It's probably no better than the aftermarket stuff, but it's definitely better for me because it's so easy to understand and dead simple to use. I'm a super-sibilant singer and I'm constantly fighting the lisp/"th" effect when I use these things. Because Logic's native plugins run very efficiently (or so I would like to think), it made it easy for me to consider throwing a couple of these on my vocal. The top one is focused more on the eff's and ch's, while the bottom is doing the lion's share of the work and hits at the meat of the esses. BTW, this AND db or 2 of automation!

I didn't know there was an update either.
I've been using the FabFilter one for years now.... so if it's that good or better, it really is something.
I have zero problems on High Sierra ....but am reluctant to go Mojave at the moment because everything is running so smoothly.

I was just telling someone about to drop coin on a hugely expensive new Logic system to budget for a deEsser--as that's the only thing of the built in stuff that wasn't useable, IME/O. I talked to him again today and mentioned that may not be the case by the time he gets the new system set up!! Ha.

I have a friend who solely uses the free Logic plugins. He does only his own band projects right now, but I think the albums I've heard sound pretty good honestly. He mixes very slowly though, using some decent Focals.
Also nice in this Logic update is not necessarily new plugins, but some of the interfaces to older tools have been updated so can resize them and read them better on different screens. I hope they continue to update these, as lots of the stuff hasn't changed in ages, even if it still sounds fine.

After a couple years of not using Logic and really dedicating myself to Pro Tools, I've been working on a project in Logic and really enjoying using it. Once you get past a few differences in mindset, I am finding Logic really fun to work in. I just used the De-Esser and was very impressed on now transparent it sounded. Even though I have several de-essers including Fabfilter, UAD, and probably some others I don't remember, this new Logic de-esser could easily become my go to.

Tried the new deesser last night on a spoken word thing recorded on a handheld Zoom H1n. Indeed, it did sound quite good. I *think* DMG's Essence outclassed it a bit in top end transparency, but I didn't have time for much of an A/B. And honestly, for the job I was doing, it didn't matter either way. They both sounded good.
