In my ever-running pursuit of the homogeny of Country Music, I find myself with several opportunities to add some "whoaaa's" in a couple of my songs. My approach has been gang vocal kind of thing - but on my worktape/acoustic versions, they always sound cheesy as hell. Maybe that will be different in a full production. Any ideas? Any tried and true approaches?

Have you tried the 9 vocals (slightly out of tune ) per side thing? Cut 6 vox right on the mic. Cut another 6 vox 1 foot away and then another 6 vox 3 feet away. Pan hard left and right. Should be big!! LOL

Nope - but that's exactly the kind of thing I'm asking about! Thanks! Ala MJ here?

You can also add 6 tracks of whisper vocals for more air and depth if needed....

If you'll wear a black and gold vest like MJ when you record them, John, your guaranteed to cut solid gold vocals.

After hearing Ric Fox's wonderful background vocals for Daniel's song, over on cowboy's "I NEED YOUR HELP" thread, I'm getting inspired to look a lot closer at background vocal. Typically, I don't use any, just a harmony vocal occasionally. So far, the original C12 is the best mic I've ever used. I've heard files where a U47 outguns a C12, but the C12 I used was beyond description, other than to say my voice sounded like I dreamed it could, even better than the real thing. If I had it, I'd look no further.

Wouldn't hurt to sing like him too.

He still looked human in that video, although the nose job was tragic. I'm not a fan of men with very high voices, with the exception of Smokey Robinson and Franki Valli, but he was a natural, and amazing.

You know, I've never really cared for Smokey Robinson...I don't know what it is - I love Motown...but I just don't get into much of what he and the Miracles did... I guess I should move this post into the "Who don't you get" thread...

Wouldn't hurt to sing like him too. MJ's stacked vocals on smooth criminal chorus, sounds like a funk horn section! It really is Bad! He probably pooped more rhythm out every morning than most of us will have in 2 lifetimes

I swear there's a home demo of Billy Jean out there somewhere...and I swear I've heard it...but I could be making that up.
