I have one of the blue faced ones and they are very nice to lock things in place a bit. They are great for world and dance stuff to get the music pulsing with compression. I don't do much of that but its cool to know I have the ability if I choose to. Props to the Elysia crew fixing mine in a hurry and getting it right back to me when mine went down last year, too.

The first pic is the day we put it together and the others are as I filled it with gear. The pic with Jim Lauderdale ended up being a Sweetwater ad for Mojave Audio. The last pic is from the recent Capi party we hosted. I love days like these, when each of these pics were taken. Sadly, with the dimensions of the room, its hard to get a clear pic of the whole set up. I love the ergonomics of being able to reach everything and not leave mix position. R Looking good Randy! whose that guy without the beard in that one shot? his eyes look a bit like yours... Is that your clean cut brother? Yeah, it hasn't been all that long that I decided to hide the razor from myself.

Here is a trick I do to drums for dimension and top end eq at mix time. Place two PZM mics flat on wooden stools in back of the kit, equal distance apart. Record them with matching mic preamps and set levels as close to matching as you can get them. Once recorded, spread them far L and far R while keeping your overheads and room mics tucked in a little tighter than you normally do. Shelf the PZM's group channel eq (top end) down a db or two from 4k and up as PZM's are pretty harsh. Lock them hard in place with a fast and clean compressor and blend to taste with the rest of your kit. There is your eq for the whole drum buss that is natural and keeps the kit alive but not ultra processed sounding. If I am recording a fairly boomy or dark acoustic guitar, I will put a PZM on their music stand and blend in a similar fashion.

I have done that on dreamy ballads. That is a great trick!

Cambridge Eq from UA is a staple. I like the Elysia Museq also.

My wife will more than likely come with me, so it won't be awkward for the girls to be there. She plays fiddle, sings and sometimes engineers for me, too.

When I go to bed, I drip a little pure olive oil in my ears. Right when I get up, I do a mix of warm vinegar and water, 50/50 mix, gently and repeatedly rinsing with an ear bulb hanging over the sink. It really works for me.

You can use their CMC controllers or make key command macros for anything you need, John.

Cubase (Steinberg) has been very open eared as to how to improve their program and make it more useful. They are growing by leaps and bounds with every version. Glad I am on board.

I thought they were a fairly good sounding stock mic. Once Shannon put a capsule of his making in it, it was a contender.

That vid isn't a very good sonic representation of that mando either. It actually sounds and records pretty good.

He plays outside on the street in all seasons and that mando catches hell. He does have it set up from time to time. Maybe a setup guy can reach a hand out as I did. Little things go a long ways. He has sold quite a few of those EP's and I am happy that we could help him a little bit. I like to help those that need it and are willing to get off of their butt and help themselves.

Not the kind of ranting I am talking about really. I would explain more, but then I would start being just as guilty of it.

The Retro Doublewide's are really cool. They weren't made to replace the STA, but rather have a different voice with an opto feel. I think most everyone who has tried them expected them to sound like a 6386 Varimu based tube comp. That isn't gonna happen without high voltage. They do their own thing that is quite different. I dig them on various sources, but my favorite uses are female vocals and upright bass. Both sound great through them as it doesn't make them wooly sounding. It keeps the mids intact. I think many people are over using the Doublesides compression stage and not liking when it hits the stressed stage. They are made to be gentle and invisible -2 to -4 compression. That is the sound! Most of the vids I have watched show the needle slamming -10 or better and that is not its sweet zone. Does anyone in Nashville have an AML 54F50? I would love to hear one in person.

I sure want to see a more extensive video of the AML 54F50. There is only 1 video on youtube and it has so much verb it is hard to tell what it sounds like. It isn't an AML made video I don't believe.

Nice idea, John! Lets put a test together! I know Bart Bush has an EZ 1073. Who has the Heritage Sr in Nashville?
