I'd love to drop by, but I'm east coast. I've a 1968 Altec 9200A (same thing the former Sound City has now) waiting on me to decipher and upgrade/restore, sitting in the corner for 8 years now. People keep offering to buy it, maybe it'll get away before I get to use it. Who knows if it sounds better or worse. A Cheech and Chong record was recorded on it.... The earliest stuff there, I had no outboard to speak of. Now it's all outboard. I got more than I can use, for sure. Early on I worked on an ex-BBC Neve full of 33114 and 33115's, my engineering was in the early part of the learning curve, and the stuff sounds it. I still got shit for a room, a run-down rental I wouldn't dream of pouring money into. speechless, thats just awesome, man you gotta get that altec going!! i contacted Fairfax(i think thats what they call soundcity now?) about tracking some drums there recently, i didn't even get a reply after a couple emails... mehhh.

the production techniques of today are astoundingly advanced/and comically easy to implement as compared to yesteryear, but those easily accessed abilities have led to giving way to gimmickry and actual talent has taken a seat in the back of the bus, i mean seriously, at least 90% of the mouthbreathers sitting at the top of the charts today would be laughed out of a career in music if all they had in front of them was a mic, all the bands that mo mentioned were just insanely talented, an attribute thats all but scoffed at today.

I need to email Mark and see where I'm at in the queue of the demos. I haven't heard from him for a while. just buy the mic, you'll end up selling your 121 to buy a second VL37.... seriously, you will 8)

Yeah, it's all my stuff. Oldest is tracked through the Mackie to the blackface in a basement with 6'5" ceilings, more recent the Mackie is a glorified summing mixer. Again, it spans 18 years, so the 'something' varies across time. Point is, the Mackie is the least of my problems. Is Spotify the worst offender? It seems like it's the record labels. I pay for it, I play records I also own hardcopy, so someone's getting paid at least twice by me. At any rate the stuff I've done I can find on Spotify is the only stuff I can legally play you, in a way that stands some chance of paying a royalty. If it's on Apple streaming, try it there. There's plenty I've done that sounds as good or better, but I'd have to upload it somewhere (file sharing) or mail you a CD-R. Small spaces are a bitch, especially the low ceilings, the room is the most important piece of gear anyone can have imv, but even without seeing your rig, I'd suggest the Mackie ISN'T "the least of your problems"? Honestly, if you're pulling that good of a sound out of one of those, you must have great outboard and skills, if you used a console like my JW modded delta, you'd absolutely lose your mind! it will unequivocally, and objectively eat a mackie as a bad tasting snack, it's a steak dinner vs a happy meal, it's super hifi, and will put on full display all the colors your skill and outboard have to offer in technicolor haha, seriously, if you live anywhere near san diego, come by and give what i've got up and running so far a whirl, maybe i can learn something from you? you're more than welcome, these consoles can be had for a song before the JW mods, and if i remember correctly you've got mad soldering skills? so you might not need to spend too much $ beyond sweat equitizing 8)

It all had something to do with a Mackie. Some of it even 16 bit blackface ADAT's. Given there's a lot of music that can't ever be heard without a streaming service, I doubt it's realistic to say 'never will' without ceasing to hear much new or off the beaten path. Seems unsustainable. i'm using apple streaming, spotify is the worst offender when it comes to paying artists... right? Anyway, stuff sounds good, is it urs? whats with the coy "something to do with a mackie" line? spit it or quit it! haha, I STILL have a "hard" blackface adat as well, they sure have that sound don't they....

See what you think of the sound of these, if you can access Spotify. This is stuff from about an 18 year time period.
don't have spotify, and i never will, is this stuff recorded on a mackie?

I MIGHT have something new brewing in the chutes. Its not the 32x4 but something that can be used "after" that and in conjunction with it. I am still in the very early design stages but think I am onto something cool. It has been done before but never to this level. More to come as I progress. I am working on this after store obligations and when I need a mental break from tearing down the console and studio to move so its important but not a first priority. hmmm, can u give us any more hints? this is gonna drive me nutty! will it also incorporate your ACA section? When you making the jump to NV Jeff? welcome bartacusad

Some of my favourite records are mixed on a cheap mackie vlz. I cant hear anything bad. If you know your tools you will have a great mix even with the mackie. Why not useing one of those, or one of the A&H ZEDs after my tech moded the PSU this litlle thing is less noisy and rocks everything I need for a home setup. can you point us to one of these mackie mixes that sound great please? i'd love to sell all my real gear and go this route if it doesn't matter, not kidding.

why not build a Matachung C12 and a MKU47? i know you've built some other stuff, with the right capsules and caps, those mics are impossible to beat for the $ imo, besides i heard you know where to get good caps 8)

realgearonline.com/post/78742/quote/4392>we'll eat at sizzler and split the bill with the spotify royalties Drake's popularity eludes me, but with 1.8 billion streams, even those micro-cent royalties must add up. i tried to do the math on this, it's hardyaknow haha, 1.8x 0.0007 cents per spin is about $126,000 or so... or is it 12,600? my calculator just sneered at me 8)

Unless i'm missing something? what ever that is can't be any easier than taking pics, saving to the session file folder within a dated sub folder, then when you progress, you make another sub folder with new date, refer as needed, pretty simple stuff no?

what happened to the one you bought last year? Harbor freight? You talking snowblower? Didn't end up with one last year. I was trying to get my hands on one last February, but everywhere was sold out. At the time, Sears could get me one, but it wouldn't be in until March 30. I bailed then and scored it for $150 less (0% interest/24 months too) on Thanksgiving. Sitting in my garage fueled up and ready to rumble now. Oh, i thought you blew out a new one, i did remember you blew one out last year and i figured you replaced it...? I blew out a pre last night.... mehhhh..... one step forward, 3 steps back...

cool, specifically, one way i like to use compression is for a subtle compacting, thickening, tightening effect by setting just a low enough threshold to keep "it" in compression all of the time, fastest attack, slowest release within musical/noise floor reason, but using a very light ratio, i prefer to use a very transparent compressor with lots of control parameters for this, it's the only type of compression i'll even consider during tracking (i don't even like doing that to be honest), then i move down the line to my next compressing task in series during mixdown.
the FC526 appears to be almost the perfect tracking comp for this, I'm thinking especially with the new input/output mod?

IMO compressors are the single most powerful tools an AE has at hand, the reason i ask "why do you use compression?", is I noticed while reading some threads over the purple site, that most people know of virtually no use beyond squashing things down and making them louder, so i'm curious as to why/how, and for what purposes people here at this vastly superior forum use their compressors? Please describe with more than a 2 word answer, i look forward to learning some new tricks? One thing i know for sure, there is definitely way more than a single answer to this question. btw, stick a fork in me, i will add something to this tmmrw, i figured i'd try to get it going tonight 8)
