And here is Max Martin's latest track with "The Weeknd" who he is touting as the next Michael Jackson. The singing is smashed flat and annoying, the slaps, snaps, and claps are fake tiny and flat and the bass line while funky has no soul sonically which leaves you saying "interesting". Which is not an emotional response. And I just realized Max totally ripped off the bassline from MJ and dropped it an octave. Ass

Yup. Nothing Max Martin or his legions of copy kats have produced sounds anything like Quincy Jones-Sweiden-& Jackson. I heard "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" recently on some good monitors and realized that Sweiden wasn't lying when he said no compressor on the vocals. Just fader rides and a super talented and well prepared singer. Greg Phillingane's moog line has sick depth, and the string arrangements by Ben Wright feel like they are swirling and chasing through the mix. The whole piece is so alive and musical. The claps are the best ever.

You can find them for $4100 new without rack, $4700 with VK rack so paying $4500 plus fees for used is too much in my opinion. Never hurts to email the guy and offer him $3500 right now. Sounds like his last couple auctions didn't go smoothly.
What a great pre. Although I'm partial to the 1084 when it comes to white whales.

It's a sound that fits well in the progressive jazz palette. Obviously not something for a Ray LaMontagne song but funky and almost direct sounding which I really like on this George Benson tune. It falls in the genre of the DX7. Its a specific sound for a specific genre.
Certain guitars are just peculiar enough to give a song a memorable character. Always liked this acoustic with all the room noise on "Drowning".

All you need is a vintage Neve and a UREI 1176.
John Fields tracked this song for Parachute, I really like the vocal on it - vintage U87 - API 3124 - UREI 1178
And then Jon Kaplan mixed it and he hit it in the box with a fairchild plug and 1176 plug. So that chain took a good amount of compression and still ended up sounding rock'n roll and forward enough for today's radio.

I love the early Neumann u87. I had one with "the Gotham Mod" that opened up the top end a little bit, but I'm not sure that's the right fit for that classic mic. That mic has a mojo all its own that should not be messed with.
I'm a songwriter and while I like my custom clones, there is something to be said for the "vibe" and "headspace" vintage gear puts you in. For me singing into an old U87 that Jackson Browne recorded with, or sitting at my 1973 Mark I Suitcase Rhodes, often does something cognitively to help facilitate the magic of "writing music" much the way athletes benefit from mental visualization and other techniques to dial in their focus and "get in the groove."

I saw Lady Antebellum on PBS and Dave Haywood was playing a Wurlitzer 140B with midi that he got from Ken Rich Services. When he played their hit "I Need You Now" it sounded like a Yamaha Stage piano. Is he triggering a sound module from the midi in the Wurlitzer? I've never heard a Wurly sound like this.

All the great records that had "vocals" on them used recording engineers and "fader rides". Michael Jackson, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, you name it, most of those seminal records from the 70s were a Neuman U87/U67, a console, fader rides and EQ. Making records shouldn't be a "one-man show". Compression has become a crutch for the "one-man studio low budget/no budget project. And a lot of us fall into that category today, but people should get back to actual engineering. The physicality of it, moving microphones around, riding faders, pushing air. And working with others, that's where the magic is.

Not a song title. Just an observation of how much fantastic music I took for granted as a kid. Beats like this one Kanye would kill for, and Max Martin can't write with this kind of soul. This was just one of 100 songs when it came out in the early 80s on the radio that were killing it. So much good music this only made it to 65 on the charts, even with Michael Jackson singing backups. And look at the breadth and variation of artists on the radio at one time.
