The 15 watt Monoprice amp is a real sleeper, incredible deal. Rumor is it's built by the people who build Laney. My lead guitarist borrowed mine and won't give it back...

The snare is the center of the drumset, literally and figuratively. If the snare is in the center then where is the kick? They can't both be. Really? Who sez?
Do you listen with your ears or your eyes? In general, unless the kick is WAayy off center - like in a double kick set, it usually sounds straight up the middle. And the snare probably because of its percussive dominance, is generally up the center as well, at least psychologically.
And because they live in different areas of the spectrum they can share the space quite well.
Also, if you have any plans to release in vinyl, you need to put kicks up center.

You can't do a proper electrical match by ear. And an electrical match may not always be the best sounding, depending on personal taste. Whatever, I trust my ears and they haven’t failed me yet. Anyway isn’t that what I said? Jeez. Well, no - you appear to treat the words "Match", and "Tune"as being interchangeable (when applied to tubes) but in fact they are not. "Matched" refers to a specific technical process where tubes are measured to have exactly identical operating characteristics. "Tuned" refers to tweaking various parameters (but mostly bias) so that the amp sounds "good", which is a subjective choice.

Yes my corner Rexall drug store had one with replacement tubes on the lower shelves (the start of self service). I wish it was still there, I could use it to test my VF-14, EF-14 and 6072 tubes. Not with any accuracy, you couldn't. Those things were dogs, basically told you if emissions were present and whether you had a short. And you couldn't use them to test solder-in tube types.

I recently bought an AVO tube tester on eBay as I have so many. It’s useful and It’ll cut the time down but ultimately I’ll still have to use my ears to match pairs. Apart from some Neumann mic’s most of my tube gear is new though as I’m more comfortable than fiddling with that high old voltage sh*t. You can't do a proper electrical match by ear. And an electrical match may not always be the best sounding, depending on personal taste.

Oh yeah. Tube testers apparently were everywhere in the 40s - 60s. My grandma & even my dad have said they remember going down the 7-11 to test & buy new tubes for the radio or TV. Even car stereos from the 1940's/50s had tubes. Couple of my guitar player friends have old tube testers. They're kinda worthless unless you have the charts for that particular machine... magic decoder ring. There are some new modern testers out there. I've thought about picking up this orange a few times but there always seem like better ways to spend $500. Its hard partly because I can call a buddy if I need to, and aside from the occasional death I've already tested & sorted my stash. Maybe one day. orangeamps.com/products/accessories/amplifier-management/valve-tester/That Orange "tube tester" is a ripoff - don't buy it. What you need is a Hikok mutual conductance tester. With an up to date tube chart (Should not be that big a problem, given that new designs for tubes are nearly nonexistant these days.) This is a professional service tech's machine and will give you more than the "Go-NO Go" of the cheap machines - and also will test a wide spectrum of tube types, which the Orange toy will not do. It won't even test all the tubes found in guitar amps. with the Hikok you can even match tubes.

Came across this & noticed people actually owned this as all radios, TV's, & other things had tubes before the solid state revolution in the early 60's? No, but they didn't need them. There were tube testers at every major supermarket and hardware store. Not very good testers, but the average customer wouldn't know what to do with a mutual conductance tester.
And the tester shown in the ad is of the crappy variety. Most of the bulk of it is storage for replacement tubes.(Often, if not usually second rate tubes from discount resellers - "American Servicemaster", etc.)

I think when Drew said something would be coming for DSP he meant new plugins. But we'll see. That would be my guess. Updated converters, AVB or Dante, or AES could all be possible. But they are one of the most successful interfaces without those features. It might be interesting to see an interface with both sharcs and an ARM processor on board. Not sure what that might offer, but anything that takes latency down before the DAW is bonus. Heat is a big issue with increasing the number of sharcs in an Apollo. So if they do add more expect a larger chassis. I disagree with John. They will still invest in DSP for years to come. It still performs well for tracking. Digi design still pushes it, as do Metric Halo. And now with Native switching there's actually a selling advantage over something like Clarett because you have a choice. And the hardware processing might not be growing but they are increasing hardware in the form of mics, Oxbox and pedals. They are more well rounded than ever for the contemporary recording engineer. One area that might not be on the radar but wouldn't surprise me is if they take on the Trinov type of product. That would be DSP and something that could expand market share for Apollo and LUNA and be something people have asked for. They are NOT increasing hardware. The just canned the best mic guy they'll ever be able to get - and I would put the odds that they can be successful without him on the stuff he already designed at slim to none - there are too many little details that they don't know anything about - because they canned their mic guy. They've already done a fair job of torpedoing their reissues of the classic compressors among anyone with properly functioning ears.
Pedals? UA becoming a PEDAL COMPANY? That's funny. NOT what I would call progress.
Something you don't seem to get is that doing hardware is in every way more resource intensive (costly) than software, as well as being a huger PITA to deal with business-wise than software. The reason you do hardware is because you love hardware. I'm not seeing a whole lot of love for hardware from the people who appear to be steering UA.

I'm just guessing, but based on recent events (the shakeup with the mic dept, the introduction of Native versions of the plugins, etc,) That UA long term plans probably include closing down the DSP section slowly, but not to offer much in the way of additional support and probably to not introduce anything new in that area. My guess is that they're probably going to get out of hardware completely in the long run - their reproductions of classic hardware are overpriced and, in many or most cases, outclassed by "clones"... And there's not much point in runnming a DSP box that I can see, once everything has been ported. So, you predict UA is going to close shop altogether? Or what other profit centers do they have? Afaik it's only DSP and hardware, right? Did you miss the topic of the thread? UA has gone native. Not all the way - yet - but once it starts I see no reason for them to continue with DSP development, which will be redundant. Why compete with themselves?

John I think it all depends on how UAD put their licensing agreements with manufacturers together, if they say in there somewhere that Neve only licenses them for use with dedicated DSP we may see cards and satellites for a while.
Well, yeah, maybe, but wouldn't Neve simply renegotiate the contract? Seems to me it would be in their favor in the long run.
If I was UA I'd be looking to get rid of "dead weight" asap. It doesn't seem to me like their heart is into that aspect of things much anymore, except for PR purposes.

I am a decent guitar player. I also hate everything I am playing lead wise at the moment. I know everyone has their own style but I feel like everything I play sounds the same. What’s a good rut buster? Try playing bass for awhile. Give you a different perspective.

Hello Your friend is a talented designer, he is very good at it, let him continue in the same spirit, I am sure he will succeed, it has great potential as a designer of gaming platforms. Does your friend not want to try to design online casino platforms? For example on the type of 1bonzaspins.com/mobile this platform, there is not only a computer version, but a mobile version, which is very convenient. You stand in traffic, you can earn. on a break at work, you can earn, sitting on the toilet, you can earn. and I tell you it's not small money, it all depends on your desire, and whether you are willing to risk to raise a large sum of money What are you doing here? I don't believfe that you are either a musiciasn or an audio engineer.

8"-12" has been my general range with LDC's. I'm listening to what it sounds like. Live, I eat the M88, 'cause that's what gets me in front of the band. In the studio, a better sounding room allows more distance and visa versa. So you use an M88 live? What a coincidence! They're great mics... beat the pants off any Shures.... Were you using the same mic back in the day?
Recently I've been running it through an A-Designs channel strip and the Opto-Comp , which is IMO the best of the new LA2As.

I organised a demo of an M7 for a weekend. Boy I was so excited unboxing the unit, I got it all wired in and started using it in a mix of a song. And to my complete surprise I was totally underwhelmed. I have no idea what I thought this box was going to add to my mixes but I found I prefered my slew of UAD, Relab and TC reverbs which I concluded emulated something of a different type of reverb that’s more of an effect, more steamy and modulated, possibly more grainy. Now with UAD’s Capital and especially the Motown chambers I’m beyond happy with plugin reverb (it’s come a long way) That said, I did think the ability of the M7 to simulate realistic spaces was superb and I imagine anyone involved in film music and Post would find a couple of M7’s essential to their set up! Same thing happened to me with my first set of high end preamps. I spent a LOT of money on a set of Neve 1290's and expected angels to come down from heaven and personally caress my tone. They didn't. It sounded mostly the same as my cheap preamps with just a little more clarity.. Mics, other gear, even softwares have been the same. It turns out that the hype for pretty much everything far outpaces the actual qualities of the gear and expectations are usually built too high to ever be satisfied. I dunno...... My Opto-Comp gave me just exactly what I expected.

Yes; I do believe, and have provided a very sound argument, that emulating audio gear in software is more difficult (for many reasons) than cloning existing hardware designs that have schematics and reference architectures. Do you have credentials in either software engineering or electronics engineering?
If so, I'm all ears. If not...no comment.
I have credentials in both and software engineering is always more difficult. Not necessarily because of the know how but the technical, long term support, cost limitations etc. invoked by the hardware which the software runs upon. It's always fun when someone says this plugin is maxing out my Celeron processor..
You can do a lot more with external DSP based physical racks, I'm not saying it's always necessary but a Briscasti for example is what it is for a reason.
You definitely have a point. So did plinker, before he let the rhetoric take over. There's a small semantic "gotcha" in there in that it has been credibly maintained that you can't really do a perfect softwre emutation of hardware because hardware is never absolutely perfect. So you're chasing a wraith.
In your answer you mentioned several long tern cost factors, some of which are not actually in the control of those writing the agreement. Not if a company is publicly held, with a board of directors, outstanding stock, etc. I'm talking about long term support, cost limitations imposed by hardware, all that stuff that gets promised, but money talks and the losers go under the buss. So it really is contingent on the honesty of the opposing side.(Of course the practical "Business" way is to dump all those legacy people in the trash with a non- compatible update that won't run on old hardware, and offer then maybe 20-25% off on the new softwre to them as a booby prize.)

I had forgotten all about those colors. In retrospect it was a sign of things to come. Blatantly thumbing their nose at the pro market.... Pandering to the bedroom crowd. Not sure the prices are "bedroom crowd" John . Not pointing any fingers but this thread has become a little "purple" IMO - largely speculation Cheers, Ross Would you want to set up a mic that looked like that on a stage or in a public studio? Given the choice of another mic of similar quality that doesn't scream "Dilettante!" or maybe "Fashionista!" or won't invoke ire from any video guy who might be present?
I vwouldn't. And I have a few very expensive but normal looking mics to use. U48. C12a. K84(pair). Coupla Pearlmans. Etc. Why would I want to use a mic that evokes Martha Stewart before it's even plugged in?
Mics should not call attention to themselves. It's not professional.

A lot of things have collided with this company. They've been strategizing their diversification for years now, knowing that DSP couldn't be their main thing forever. And studios are only going smaller and cheaper. They are trying to straddle that line between high-priced brand and affordable entry brand. Not unlike every other big name that isn't Neumann. But that chip factory fire was a big deal, and COVID had its pros and cons for a business like theirs. If they were financing new growth for diversifying, and then those other things hit costs of current business expenses, they could be looking at an issue where they had to cut expenses somewhere. They missed the point (fact) that high priced companies NEVER survive an attempt to attract a mass market for low priced junk. It always kills the primary, like a lamprey eel. The only (semi) way to barely survive is to open one-shot "straw" companies to unload the junk.
The late night TV ads are filled with the names of formerly proud, famous companies that are now figurehead "names" hawked by promoters like "Bulbhead". Along with the more obvious one-shot products. The locusts have arrived and more are coming. We need bug spray!
