I haven't bought a UAD plugin in years. Been on strike because of the resale policy. BUT, this 4 for 399 deal plus $25 coupon is enticing.
I'm in the same place. After getting into UA deep enough awhile back, their resale policy in light of their premium price for their plugs has deterred me from buying any UA for 3 years now, but I am going back and forth on the 4 for $399 today with hours to go, thinking I'm going to hate myself either way.
I have to give it to UA, their marketing guys and their business plan to optimize pricing are are two depts I wish worked for me ha ha!

There’s no doubt the plugins are excellent. I’m just Feel saturated with plugs at the moment...After buying so many I realize, basically - it ain’t the plugs.

The API’s are the one thing I really want...just can’t pull the trigger Are the API 500 EQ’s good? The API EQ are INCREDIBLE. graphic on bass, 550a on guitars, instant "API" just a rocking, forward tone that makes you go uhhhhhggghhhghgh How’s the Curve Bender? I suppose the two ‘for sure’s’ on my list is the CC and Distressor. I could probably just grab the Distressor and be happy, to be honest. But it seems like the bundle is a good deal. The curve bender is INCREDIBLE. I mastered an entire album using this plugin almost exclusively and people were lavishing me with praise for the end results. I don't own this one yet, I did it on a demo period. Sorry that doesn't help much. I hate UA just as much as the next guy, don't want to spend on it, but damn it they just keep me coming back after all the abuse because they're so lovable.

How are the Waves API’s compared to UAD? The waves API EQ never worked for me. They just felt a bit lacking most of the time, lacking in weight. Like John said I think the UAD are just "better" I do like the Waves API 2500 bus compressor however.

It’s a frustrating system and there’s no guarantee that if your $1000 satellite or whatever fails after the warranty period that you won’t have to cough up another $1000 in the event that they can’t fix it for $200 or less. The business strategy is to minimize flexibility and maximize prices. The hope is that the customer will be so impressed that they just keep investing more. They’re aiming more at a market that pays for hardware and doesn’t mind paying for multiple satellites or buying replacements. Hardware breaks afterall, right?
Software-wise these are premium products and they really should warranty them for at least 5 years if they want people to invest with confidence. If Capitol Chambers was $100-$150 on its own, fine, bought. But the idea is to rope people into spending $400 on a bundle every time something new comes out. These are top notch emulations of things that have track records. It’s a different mindset than when someone like Relab releases a new idea like Sonsig. The target market again, is people who paid for all this hardware before and don’t mind the prices. They’re probably also people who want to use the same things they’ve used for decades.
There’s a time limit on audio work as we know it as many know. We’re not going to keep getting incremental changes in home computing power every year for decades. Deep fake videos already exist. It’s only a matter of time before the average person will be able to get a top flight mixing and mastering job done by some kinda revolutionary software. Maybe not even 10 years. So I always say one might as well jump into UAD if you want the best of what’s out there now. Softube is following much the same pricing strategy too with their flagship products. I don’t think the Tube Tech MkII or the DS-1 Mk3 have changed much in price. The UAD custom bundle is a better value than that even if you own all the expensive stuff and have to settle for adding the cheaper stuff like the Cambridge and Time cube.
Prices could come down. Look at how plugin alliance was just basically giving away everything. After the usual voucher you could get previously premium stuff like the Acme comp for less than $10. SSL console and HG2 for less than $30. I think their mastering bundles were also around $30 each with things by Vertigo in them. Looks like they liquidated all that stuff because there’s some new wave of products coming in.
I kinda feel like I have most everything I need now. What I’d like is some native stuff that could hold its own better with some of the UAD standouts, so that I’m not as dependent on the satellite staying in working condition.
