I'm getting into UAD! The Capitol Chambers release had me on the fence, and the Puremix offer for the Analog Classics Pro Bundle kinda sealed the deal. Supposedly I was already "all set" with the digital part of my studio... What are your favorite UAD plugins and why?

I'm about the same as John with the go-to's, with addition of dbx160 and Harrison 32c. I like the Ocean Way for what it does. OT, but I'm digging Fabrice's version of the Fairchild in the Slate bundle. Also, I'm getting into the Townsend Sphere mic.
Looking forward to the Capitol Chambers at some point. Demo sounded killer.

Neve 1073 SSL channel, and compressor API EQ 1176 LA2A Fairchildren Helios BX20 EMT plate (although I have other ITB options now) it's still very good Ampex and Oxide tape Ampeg bass amps all of them elysia stuff (but I probably should have bought it native from Plugin Alliance)
Really like the Chandler Curve Bender but I don't own it. Getting by with Abbey Road TG from Waves for now.
Gotta say I'm really happy with almost every UAD plugin I chose to buy. There are a few that don't get used really but oh well, like the Little Labs stuff, Tilt EQ (haven't even tried it yet! just got a cheap price). Don't use the 610 preamps that much either for some reason.
Wish I had an Octo, on top of the Quad I'm using now. I need more power to make use of this collection.
Some of the best quality plugins out there when it's all said and done.

Of course when you ask this kind of question, you'll get dozens of different answers and potentially be more confused than before you asked. I've had an Apollo since the day they came out and will only mention the plug-ins I've found essential. First and foremost, the Ampex ATR-102 has been first on my 2 bus since then and has never left, not once for any mix ever. I see it as a pre-mastering tool. It should be called a "betterizer". Without overdoing it, tracks come to life. I use either the 30 ips mastering preset or the Smooth Vocal preset, turn noise completely off, and adjust input and output to taste. I'm quite judicious and rarely push it hard.
Next, although I now use the Liquid Sonics 7th Heaven as my go to reverb, you can't go wrong with UAD's EMT-140. You are guaranteed a classic plate reverb. I use the Sound Toys Little Plate more than I use the EMT-140 these days, so you could save money and dsp. Or you could get the Lexicon XL480 and wait for a Sound Toys sale to get the Little Plate for $29 instead of $99.
So, Tape, reverb, what's next.. hmm..I'd say compression, the LA2A or 1176's are very good. I have both, but use the LA2A much more often. I happen to have a few 1176 style plug-ins from other companies, the Waves CLA 1176 actually works better than my UAD 1176 for taming acoustic guitar strums.
That's my top 3: ATR -102, EMT-140, LA2A.
The rest depends on your taste and needs, but I wouldn't want to be without those plugs, especially the ATR-102.

Brainworx BX V3 for cuts, i purchased it cheap as part of a UA deal hence the answer. I use it alongside my console which is old and has a limited eq section.

The brainworx stuff is really good in general. I have some on UAD and others native from Plugin Alliance. My current fad is getting great deals at Plugin Alliance love those plugins.
I just got the Vertigo VSC-2 compressor in a bundle. It was a lot cheaper than buying from UAD.

I use the 1176 and LA2A collection a lot, as well as the Maag EQ4 on the mix buss, sometimes with the Ampex 102. I use the old Helios in electric guitars pretty often, and the API 560 comes in handy sometimes. When I mix completely in the box the EMT140 all the time, and sometimes use the EMT250. I think the SPL Transient Designer is pretty handy and sometimes is the only thing that can fix a specific problem. The Fairchild and Pultec stuff once in a blue moon. The Valley People Dynamite is useful but it and the Maag and SPL can be purchased with a UAD card. The Dimension D is also a very nice tool to have as well.
I think I could get by without any of those things but if you are going to take the plunge those are the most useful ones I’ve found. Depending on what it cost with the sale Ill probably upgrade to the new SSL Buss Compressor.

SSL channel and mkII compressor LA2A Gray Curve Bender 550a and 560B 1176 collection
I also consider the 1073 to be by far the best emulation in terms of lack of pointiness in mid-band and the phase interaction, at least compared to the BAE stuff I have. Same thing with the Pultec vs other emulations.
I will be demoing the new Chamber plugin and probably the 480L for the extra fx over the Relab (which I love), butobviously the BX20 is unique and the plate is definitely good. Also will be checking out the Helios.
That said, I still think VSR S24 and Nimbus are generally better multi-purpose modern reverbs than most of the vibey UAD stuff.
I think H910 (also native) and PrimalTap are the best retro delays itb.

The following are indispensable to me:
Neve DFC
Distressor
1176
AMS RMX 16
Ocean Way(watch the video of the guy using remic mode on an aux with pre-fader sends)
Helios
610b
Lex 224
Lex 480
Precision Delay
I prefer some native over uad such as Satin over the 102, Tapedesk over the Studer, and the BX SSL E. If you’re running anything AMD, I guess the official position is that there’s some compatibility problems. The collective experiences of the various forums is that AMD Ryzen isn’t giving anyone problems anymore though. My usb Octo can be very iffy on AMD or Intel. It was pretty much rock solid for 4 and a half months and hopefully the issue is sorted soon. People have pointed out that UAD uses more native cpu the more UAD plugins you load and that has been my experience.
My hope was that the dsp would have allowed my desktop to reach 9900k levels of power, but that’s ok. The UAD plugins are so good that they can take the place of several native plugins depending on what I needed. I’ve tried to equal or better my UAD mixes using just native when the Octo is out of commission and I’ve yet to figure out that formula. UAD plugs tend to sound full and complete, instead of thin. They saturate so well that getting stuff to sit in the mix is much easier.
That said, there’s still quite a few native plugins that are vital to making my uad mixes work. Cranesong, Punish, DS-1, Oxford Limiter, EC-300, NR-800, Tube Tech MK II, Envolution, and Autotune 5 to name a few. Punish was really vital for rock stuff. If I took that out and replaced it with something else, the whole thing fell apart. So I think you really need native and UAD to get the best of everything if you work on rock-based stuff that didn’t have all the tracks recorded in the best places.

I haven't bought a UAD plugin in years. Been on strike because of the resale policy. BUT, this 4 for 399 deal plus $25 coupon is enticing. I could grab a few that I've been eyeing over the years.
I've got to shave my list, though:
Distressor Capitol Chambers Curve Bender API 2500 API 500 Series EQ's
Thoughts?

I suppose I should demo. I’ve been pretty happy with my reverb selection, but people are going nuts over this, so it got my attention.
Also, considering ditching my Distressor HW pair for the SW version. I’ve already got the Slate, so I suppose that’s close enough to the UAD version. Probably don’t need both.

My go to plugins:
LA2A Grey SSL 4K Channel Strip Pultec EQP1A Studer A800 Tape SSL G Comp Neve 88R Channel Strip Summit TLA-100
also really enjoy: Neve 1081 Neve 33609
Unison Preamps: Neve Preamp, V76
I want to grab Capitol Chambers, but I really need an Octo to pair with my Apollo first. It’s really DSP hungry.

My best advice would be to take advantage of their two week demo period one plugin at a time and really get to know the sound of a plug. That should tell you everything you need to know about how to implement them into your work flow.
In general I've found the newer plugs (last two to three years or so) sound way better to me.
They run sales all throughout the year so if you demo something you love just wait a bit and you can get it for a reduced price.
Personally I like using UAD for compression and reverb, the two things that create space and movement in a mix. I'll use an occasional EQ but I usually use console 1 for my tonal shaping for localization in a mix.

What do you all think of the API2500?
|

I love it at slowest attack fastest release with only about a dB of compression, automatic gain makeup and adjust the thrust to taste to put it across all of my sub groups. It makes everything glue together cohesively while still breathing.

indieshouse, I do use the API2500 a bit, but I've find it to be heavy handed no matter how little of it I use. That's me, you may have many uses for it. I tend to like more clean and natural sounds.

How’s the 480L? Any comparisons to R4?

So this sale ends today. Been dragging my feet on it because I’ve been on a UAD strike over their plugin resale policy. But 4 for 400 is tempting, as there is a bank of plugs I’ve wanted.
Any other thoughts on what’s good?
Plugs I’m interested in but don’t have.
Capitol Chambers Distressor Curve Bender API Collection API 2500 Manley Vari-Mu SSL Buss Comp
I’m leaning towards eq’s, just because I have a bunch of HW compressors. Like the SSL comp when I’ve got an Audioscape and eventually a Stam MKII.

How’s the Curve Bender?
I suppose the two ‘for sure’s’ on my list is the CC and Distressor. I could probably just grab the Distressor and be happy, to be honest. But it seems like the bundle is a good deal.

The API’s are the one thing I really want...just can’t pull the trigger Are the API 500 EQ’s good? I like them tons better than the Waves ones. What I struggle with is - do they sound better than the 30 other EQ plugs I already have? I have no idea - but I know every time I demo and use them on EG Bus, I'm able to get where I want to go immediately.
