Curious what sort of workflows guys have with all of the new electronic tools out there for songwriting.
I still generally sit at a piano and record vocals and piano into an iPhone. If I have something I like I scribble out a rough chart on staff paper so that I remember the chord voicings, and jot down some lyrical ideas.
Then on "another day" I start to rebuild it in Logic, often with the vibe and magic gone.
I'm wondering how many people work this way still as versus a digital pencil/stylus into Logic or some other DAW.

I always work with a basic drum pattern in Cubase and record while I play guitar and sing at the same time. The most important thing for me is the vocal melody, which, to me, creates the mood of the song. So, my guitar parts, unless I have already written some kind of riff that I want to incorporate into a song, are often very simple. Then, I work on making the guitar/drum/bass/keys/stings etc. arrangement more interesting and write the lyric to the melody. I try to use different keys and tempos to start with when I start a new song as well.

I find it very hard to recapture an idea from a piece of written on paper. Or from a lo-fi voice recorder for example a mini cassette thing. Things get lost.
I try to record any strong ideas on the best recording equipment that I have available at the time.
One weird thing for me is these demos being presented as album tracks, often there is no distinction.
What I am saying is probably a re-do would be well called for in many cases.
It's just funny for me because I can demo in my full fledged studio at any time.
I'm interested if anyone else has comments on this that are songwriters/engineers.

If you are recording on your iphone, why not use voice memos? They are automatically available in logic under import tracks and as you build your song you can use smart tempo to follow the original vibe ?

Complimented by smart tempo ! I need to get into this whole thing more to see if it's the right move for me. Both the Music Memos route, and the smart tempo stuff. I've really only barely (and I mean baaarely) scratched the surface with it.

It’s just an interesting option.
Smart tempo gives you the option of playing to strict tempo: an exact bpm or to a variable one based on the natural tempo of what you recorded in music memos.
When you import your music memo track and right click on it, you can then either conform its tempo to the set session tempo or the opposite.
So, as we were talking about vibe, the natural perhaps somewhat more fluid time of your initial informal takes can be used to set session tempo.

Well, Google is spying on I mean reviewing every file you do - just ask them to covert it to a format logic will accept. how do you do that? Say it aloud, they're listening. in 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 you will have an advert show up on your phone that tells you which app you should get to do that. Happens to my anti-iphone son all the time. (At times, I spit things out in the kitchen whilst he's cooking just to mess up the ads. Dog meat! Duck pudding. Duck this carp. erectile . . . you get the picture I'm sure. LOL)

Most of the time I sit down (or stand) with the primary driving instrument and play it (and sing) until I have the bones of the tune and an idea of what the form is. Sometimes I don't know what the lyric is, or maybe I'll only have a general idea for a theme, but I'll have a very strong idea of what the melodies are before I open up Logic. From there, I usually set up a Drummer track that is reasonably inspirational given the genre. It could be as simple as a shaker, but often I'll find an appropriate beat and lay out the form with simple fills - I never end up using the Drummer tracks, but I put down subsequent tracks as if they're the final product. Demo is not part of my vocabulary.

Charting? Ive already forgotten how to play parts of my new recorded tunes. I realized the other day in a painful few seconds that I changed the key from original when I recorded one!! Ha....launched into a solo that was SO wrong....
