On a whim I’ve bought a dbx118 and 119 for 75$ For the pair . Anyone using or have used one ? And on what do they seem to work best on ? An engineering friend in Nashville says he use the 118 running all instruments on a mix through it and blends back into the mix. Also opinions on are they worth modding ?

I used to use a 118 all the time as a cheap substitute for a 160 in a club PA system. IIRC the 119 was almost the same thing except that one of the functions - I think maybe compression - was a lot more limited in scope as to what it could do, I don't remember as I almost never used the 119. I also never used the expansion mode.
The only "mods" I can think of would be the addition of civilized connectors instead of the damn RCAs and maybe the addition of transformers if there's room. I think that I might have been running external balancing transformers on the output back in the day - it's been a really long time...
$75 for the pair is a pretty good deal, even today.
IIRC there was a slightly older unmit in the series called the 117, but I never used one.

My 118 is great in expansion mode for 70’s handclaps, lol, and more so for cleaning up hi hat bleed in a snare track. Just used it this week on a snare that went to 118 and then to a tubetech blue tube guitar pedal. Worked great at giving me just distorted snare not hi hat. Compression mode can destroy drum mono room in a very original way too.
