All has been said about the mics we like for OH duties so, Let's go the other way and talk about the ones we tried but, didn't like...and why.

I was in a bind and tried a pair of Rode NT1A. Did not like.

Peluso CEMC6 are probably too bright
AT4047 are pretty good but they don't suit everything. Maybe that's not too bad.
AT4033 maybe weren't quite clear enough and a bit brittle.
MXL R40 kills on room, but atrocious on overheads.
those cheap MXL / CAD SDC mics... forget about it. Only if you're poor and young.

Goddammit, you beat me to it! I never got along with those 414's (except on male vocals actually).

Yeah 414B-ULS and almost anything by Audio-Technica that I've tried so far. (I have no experience with 5040s yet)
Granted, there are a whole lot of 'don't go there' microphones that we would never use for overhead duties!

Neumann KM140....the treble boost was always a thing to fight. Crown SASS-P mkII. Pretty harsh and very hard to nail the center image at close distances. Oktava MK-012. Kinda hard/brash sounding. Similar with the MK-102.

Similar with the MK-102. Yeah I forgot about the Oktava 012. They just had a weird frequency response that was unnatural. Really like them on a lot of acoustic instruments though.

Same experience with my Joly modded Oktavas. Phasey and uninspiring on OH.

Sm58s 58s on OH would be a desperate move by any AE. Kinda like, “I’m micing the kit and I’m almost done. Oops, I’m out of mics! Lessee, what do I have here in the back of the closet? Aha! A pair of 58s!”

Never completely got along with my pair of AT4050's. Something hard about them.

I've had pretty good luck with my Jim Williams modified AKG C414B-ULS, although a lot of times I use an AEA R88 and the 414's are used elsewhere.
Rode NT4 leaves a lot to be desired in the "meat" department.

The Audio-technica 4033 for me. Loved them on acoustic, and some vocals. But on drum overheads they sounded thin, harsh and unflattering.

I'll make a vote for akg c1000 hard to describe but schmeary is the most specific thing I can remember Occasionally, like in metal, they can work REALLY well. Now, AKG C451s? I just can't get on with them on overheads

Yes, my recording partner and I started out with a 3340 and four SM-57s. It’s amazing what you can do with that. Plus, no agonizing over mic choice😊

I cant ever seem to get the R88 to sound, "right" I’ve been using it with an AEA RPQ for about 5 years now for overheads. I think it’s about time to sent it to AEA and get the ribbons checked because the low end response is a little off now between the two sides which can throw off the imaging. I usually use the low cut filter on the RPQ to dial them in closer which helps a lot

Does it seem the RPQ is the best option with that mic? That R88 is on my list. Every drum recording I’ve heard with the R88/R84 sounded right to me.

I really like the AEA preamp I think it’s a great value. I have GML, AML 1073, Daking, Mercury M72s...I think it’s just as good as any of them
