I'm a bigger fan of 67 sound personally, but I don't think you'd make a bad recording with that U87 either. I like the warmth the 3d quality of the 67. The U87 is clear and detailed, but not as enveloping. I have to agree with what was said a little earlier, I would have rather you had the capsules as close as possible. My U87ai and 67 style mics that I've had really like to be positioned direct on and worked closely a bit for their beautiful proximity. It's not like the 47 or 49 where you can kind of be a little bit away and their proximity just sucks the sound in. The K67 likes that front address. Well, that's my experience anyway. I was probably 5" from the mics or so - so I was getting a little bit of the proximity effect. I will do as you and indiehouse request and make another recording with the top of the headbaskets touching. One of the reasons I started looking around for a 67 style mic was because of the behavior of this 87 against high SPL's. I am a 'loud' singer when I sing in higher registers - I know you are too Vincent as I've watched a number of your excellent videos. The 87 will distort/clip on rock songs for instance - and there is no real remedy aside from backing up from the mic, which in turn changes the timbre. The pad on the U87 really isn't an option either as it also changes the tone. I wanted something that would 'absorb' more sound in the high midrange and not clip and/or change the tone when the SPL's went higher. The 67 really does seem to do an incredible job of it. I'm also amazed at how good it sounds on acoustic with a little EQ.

But there is a reason people use dynamic mics ie Shure SM7b.

I would just back up a few inches. 5” is pretty close. 8”-12” would be better if you’re louder like that, but I see why you’ve done things that way. For loud singers mic technique is key.

I have what you’d call a medium sized operatic voice. You should hear some of my friends.

When I stepped into my first session the first thing humblecomposer taught me was how to position the microphone for the vocalist. The second thing was basic mic technique. He coached me on it through that session and that was it. It makes everyone’s life easier.

Allright.... here is a dry recording with the headbaskets touching - 7" off the mic. Single take, simul recorded through Apollo pres with no EQ or comp. No EQ or comp on vocal tracks in PT, but there is 2:1 master bus compression just to keep it together. Acoustic is recorded with KM84 and EQ'd ITB with Pultec plugin. The whole first verse and chorus/double is the Stam67 - 2nd verse/chorus/double is U87. I like to put it in a single file like this because you can click around to different parts while it's playing to compare. Stam67 vs U87, click below:

Good comparison NoTomorrow, thanks. I thought the 67 was a bit warmer and pleasant to listen to.

They are really pretty close. Tweak the EQ and you're not going to tell the difference IMO. That said, on this latest recording, I thought the Stam sounded slightly warmer and even, while the 87 had slight more aggressive high mids.

This is what my recollection of singing through a U67 at Shannons house is... When he asked me what I thought, I replied "sounds like my Vintage 87, but, you know, "tube-y-er" 8)
Cheers

Nice. Still on the 67 side of things, but admittedly I’m a tube mic guy.

I actually thought the 87 sounded a little warmer. I felt the 67 had a slight hardness to it, although they were very close. I wonder how it would sound with a different tube.
