Allright... so I received my Stam 67 that I ordered on Reverb and have been running it on various tests. I love this mic. This recording is versus my 1980 Neumann U87. This is one/same take, simultaneously recorded - both through UAD Apollo preamps with no tracking compression. I added some Nebula Comp ITB and some plate verb. No eq on either and the volume matched by ear. There are basically 8 phrases sung over 2 verses. The mics alternate every phrase starting with the U87 and ending with the Stam 67..... so 4 of each. So...... 87, 67, 87, 67 etc. I thought this might be an interesting way of doing this since it's the same take. You'll hear the difference in your headphones. Recorded at 96k - bounced to 16bit/44.1 - link below: NEW COAT:www.dropbox.com/s/prhp8gb9g908ydq/NEW%20COAT%20U87%20vs%20Stam67.wav?dl=0OTHER AUDIO LINKS IN THIS THREAD:realgearonline.com/post/194595/threadrealgearonline.com/post/194617/threadrealgearonline.com/post/194698/threadHere is mic switching chart for New Coat:U87>> Let's put a new coat of paint on this lonesome old town Stam67>> Set 'em up, we'll be knockin' 'em down U87>> You wear a dress, baby I'll wear a tie Stam67>> We'll laugh at that old bloodshot moon in that burgundy sky U87>> All our scribbled love dreams are lost or thrown away Stam67>> Here amidst the shuffle of an overflowin' day U87>> Our love needs a transfusion let's shoot it full of wine Stam67>> Fishin' for a good time starts with throwin' in your line Attachments:

Is that a picture of the actual mic setup? The capsules are a little too far away from each other for a proper A/B. I always make sure the headbaskets are a hair away from touching, either sideways or vertical.

On your voice (very Chris Rea, whom I absolutely love) I prefer the U87. But I would love to hear a few of the same lines done with each mic, without the guitars (and again, love those)
Mic Choice depends on the voice a lot!!

First thx, nice track and delivery ! They both sound great the 87 seems to have a little more bass and air, but I also liked how the sa67 had excellent presence and seemed a little tighter ?

Love the 67. The 87 has that characteristic hi-mid push. I like the sweeter/smoother 67.

Released in 1978 which was several years before Hall & Oate's "I Can't Go For That".

IMHO if there was a bit more compression on the SA67/hotter in the mix, it'd be a tie. BTW another great song, is "Smoke From A Distant Fire" Sanford-Townsend Band. I enjoy singing it, but No Tomorrow-your voice would be PERFECT for it! Chris

Sounds great. Here’s my take: honestly had some trouble figuring out where they switch. I’m kind of surprised, the U87 sounds more focused and slightly dead on top except for raspy sibilance, which gives a biting kind of sound. The SA67 is pretty much same signature mic except it’s not so focused, looser and much airier on top, and the sibilance is less pronounced. Very interesting, thanks for sharing. I liked the 67, sounded more realistic to me.

Thanks to everybody for your comments. I like both of these mics and will use them for different vocal styles. I've been recording with this Stam like a madman so I'll have some more stuff to put up here shortly. indiehouse re: Yes, that's the setup. They're in a 'V' configuration and each capsule is equidistant from the sound source (my big mouth) with about 4" between the caps. It's triangulated in the same way monitors are - and everything is in phase. I prefer this method when I can't decide which mic to use and want to track both. I sing directly to the spot between them and it allows me to not use a pop filter. I find it only works well when you are singing 'up close' vocals - in this case 6". If I were further back I would do as you suggest. Ward re: Cool man.... I will upload a verse of each mic raw, no ITB comp or reverb. Chris Rea = I dig him! Gotta catch that Last Train @kcatt re: thx dude - glad you found it useful ragan re: agree, you can hear that 3k bump, especially when I sing a little louder (2nd to last line, love needs a transfusion) - that's when the U87 clearly sounds a little 'harder' than the 67 @chess re: You got me, man - I didn't know that tune - it sounds great. It's amazing how good the 70's records sound. When that tune first started playing it reminded me a lot of Paul Peña - Gotta Move. We use to play that one in my band about 15 years ago. chris re: Yea in retrospect I guess it can be a little confusing. See below for the key (I'll put this in the first post as well) U87>> Let's put a new coat of paint on this lonesome old town Stam67>> Set 'em up, we'll be knockin' 'em down U87>> You wear a dress, baby I'll wear a tie Stam67>> We'll laugh at that old bloodshot moon in that burgundy sky U87>> All our scribbled love dreams are lost or thrown away Stam67>> Here amidst the shuffle of an overflowin' day U87>> Our love needs a transfusion let's shoot it full of wine Stam67>> Fishin' for a good time starts with throwin' in your line

Sorry if this has already been posted somewhere - but which tube is this? Sounds great either way.
Still patiently awaiting my SA67.

Ok so a different style tune here. I'm using the Stam67 for both acoustic guitars, the lead vocal and the single harmony vocal. Bass is a G&L Jb2 through a CAPI 312DI. On the first tune I was using the Apollo pres for the vocals - here I'm running the 67 through a CAPI VP28 into the Klark Teknik KT-2a (love this compressor). I was using my KM84's on acoustic on that first tune and I wanted to try the 67 on acoustic. I double tracked my Larrivee using the mic in figure 8 mode and EQ'd some boxy mids out because I have carpet in this freaking room. Bass is compressed ITB - vocals have no plugins at all. There is 2 bus compression - I used the Acustica Pink 7236. Mic obviously sounds better here through good pres/comps. Link below:www.dropbox.com/s/hwgztsat8q4jw05/1aud-Stam67-WAGON%20WHEEL.wav?dl=0

The two mics sound drastically different to me in the way they produce midrange. The U87 sounds crisp and clear and the Stam sounds fat and mid forward. I’m wondering what role mic placement has in the difference in tolerance and gain structures. Interestingly enough the big differences are only really apparent in lesser mid-rangey playback systems.
I really like the way the SA67 sounds on the acoustic guitar - and overall on nice monitors this mic sounds fantastic.

Both sound good. Here I preferred the way the stam held the mid range tighter.

There are 2 upgrades you can do to this mic
One is the tube (Put a Telefunken EF806) which will open it a bit up
The other one I can't reveal yet as it is work in progress but I will report back soon!

I'm a bigger fan of 67 sound personally, but I don't think you'd make a bad recording with that U87 either. I like the warmth the 3d quality of the 67. The U87 is clear and detailed, but not as enveloping.
I have to agree with what was said a little earlier, I would have rather you had the capsules as close as possible. My U87ai and 67 style mics that I've had really like to be positioned direct on and worked closely a bit for their beautiful proximity. It's not like the 47 or 49 where you can kind of be a little bit away and their proximity just sucks the sound in. The K67 likes that front address. Well, that's my experience anyway.
