I just did a closely level matched shootout of my WolfBox DIY Motown DI box vs the standard Radial J48. Mic pres were identical Five Fish NK72DI with the same Neumann OA10 style op amps. Bass is an SX P style with a Fender custom shop pickup. Clip A is pick, Clip B is fingerstyle Let me know if you can hear a difference.

Those clips are really close, and both are totally usable. The Wolfbox has a bit more weight on the bottom end-I can feel its lows more-the sound fills the speakers more to me. The Radial does a great job too, just a bit more clean.
I used to use a passive DI with a Lundahl transformer, but when I built a Wolfbox from the Triad transformer, the difference was MUCH different. The Wolfbox had tons more bottom, and gave me more of the sound that I wanted from my bass.

So what - if any - advantage will I have going through a DI vs a VP28 Platinum?

So what - if any - advantage will I have going through a DI vs a VP28 Platinum? Basically I think just a different flavor of "DI" vs. Jeff's built in DI component. In my opinion this is all very subtle stuff, getting into that tweaky kind of territory.

As well as a softened transient response which is maybe the most significant part of it, sounds natural and smooth. Probably a higher THD than the J48 also. Which Triad transformer did you use in your build? Apparently there are a few different ones that can work that I am aware of, as well as other brands like UTC.

I shot out the Triad A10J and A9J. I preferred the A9J. It really had the magic, and I used it in my build.

I understand that the original transfo company (Triad?) Is now making the original transformer again.

Yeah!! I'm really interested in trying some of those! Also really interested in Jeff Steiger's CAPI transformer, haven't tried that one yet either.

I would guess the new Triads are close to vintage since they have the tooling to do it right, but the metal used for the lams will be a bit different because of modern environmental law. I don’t know anyone who has tried any of their new recreations yet.

The Radial does a great job too, just a bit more clean. I hear it the same way. Personally I prefer the Wolfbox tone, but depending on the context I’m sure the more clean and defined sound of the Radial has its uses. Thanks for sharing!

I own both of these and Dan’s wolf box is much (warmer vintage than the Radial . Since getting the Wolfbox the radial sits in the closet.jmo

I hear a difference... The cleanliness of the Radial is fine, but I tend to prefer the THD and smoothness overall of the Wolfbox. Thanks for doing this!
