I have a pair of Shure 535 dynamic omnis that I really like as room mics. But they’re a little noisy, one more than the other, and I suspect the cables are poorly built or degraded: proprietary to xlr that I got with them. I’d love to find adapters: any ideas out there? The internet has lead me to believe that 545 adapters won’t fit. Thanks- P

Can you solder? There appears to be enough information at coutant.org that you should be able to replace the cable with something modern. (Or something modern but old-looking!)

You mean with the existing connector? That’s a good idea... it’s got some odd looking boot on it that’s given me pause... but I do build all my own cabling... I should open them and see what’s going on in there. Thanks!

The 535 used an Amphenol MC3M connector (thanks, Coutant!), which is the 3 pin version of the MC4M used on many 545s - but not all, as some 545s (the single impedance pistol grip versions) did use the MC3M. It's NOT a proprietary connector, although is is obsolete and rare.
I was able to find a listing from Allied but, as with many obsolete parts, they're expensive - $51.00 each.
If you're lucky you might do better on Ebay.

I've always wondered what that connector is. I've had them on various Pendulum Audio pieces I've owned over the years, and never been sure what they were. Thanks, johneppstein!

There’s a non-captive simpler version used on a bunch of CB radio stuff, available new within the last 20 years. Buckets of them at hamfests for 50 cents each.
