Hey folks,
Respected bluegrass guitarist Wyatt Rice and I discuss Ovation Guitars, his brother Tony Rice, and demo Scott Liebers' SL2520 "Red Dot" and SL1731 "Melcore" opamps in comparison to stock API 2520s.
I can work up a Pro Tools session via Dropbox if anyone wants to hear the samples as full resolution.
Enjoy!

Excellent as always Dan, even just on the IPhone speaker I could always tell the modern API 2520. The API 2520 always sounded like everything I hate about Ovations, Scott’s just seamed to take the edge off and make it warm and fuzzy , rounded and mellowed the edges.

The SL1731's have always had the fullest sound to me. That's what I use on my Mixbuss in my EQ's. I tried the Red Dot's, I tried the Rogue's and the SL1731's, for me, made the mixes feel finished. I will say that I use both the Red Dot's and the Rogues in my PRR-176, I use the Red Dots on the input amp and the Rogues on the output amp. It took a long time of sending vocals through that thing and swapping around Opamps to find the right sauce, but that's what you have to do to get the sound YOU are looking for. Great video, great playing! 90% of the tone is in his fingers

Red Dots for my sensibilities. Very nice. Just bought VP-28s and sorta wish I had installed Red Dots into them. Maybe later.

I honestly could not hear a difference. Bums me out that y'all are finding something unique amongst these.

I honestly could not hear a difference. Bums me out that y'all are finding something unique amongst these. Granted it's relatively subtle, but I'm hearing the red dots as a tad darker and rounder. Maybe less detail in the upper frequencies.

The red dots were just a bit more comfortable to listen to, probably a roll of there somewhere. The 1731 sounded most balanced and the API was fine, but not special. I'd take the 1731 or the Red Dots, probably the dots.
Great post Dan, thanks.

Thanks for sharing, I didnt know what to expect and didn’t read the comments. The red dots did have a nice color to them, with a voice that sounded authentic vintage to me, kind of girthy. Really nice. The SL1731 ... I was not expecting that. Like 2520 but somehow the song felt sweeter, gentler, almost like switching to coated strings? Hard to explain, it was very slight, I just sort of “felt” it more than hear it. So weird!
