I ‘be been checking out some of the small all tube Marshall amps and getting confused! I want it really for recording. I had a used dsl 15 watt here really liked the shimmery clean channel and for me thought with a good dirt peddle I’d be pretty happt, problem was the hi gain channel was super noisy, so I wondered if the amp was famed or dieing so took it back. Next up was s new 20 watt origin head into my egnator celestrian 12. It didn’t have the shimmery quality and sounded more like a hi watt: good but not what I was after. I am not looking for that over the top super saturated sound at all. I thought I might demo a new dsp in the store and see, but. An you guys school a bit on Marshall’s as their website is somewhat mind boggling! I have a 20 watt vox here now, it’s the chinese one: does clean really nice on board teen and Reverb but I find its sounds like a vox but doesn’t seem to really chime?

For clean, shimmery chime, wouldn't you want a Fender amp? I have a DR clone here that does that wonderfully.

I have a DSL40C with a creamback speaker and a DSL100H head with a 4x12 and I'm a big fan of them both. The stack has been my main amp for nearly two years now. The combo amp goes with me for out of town shows, etc, where I need something portable and "sensible."

Fenders have a very good clean but I found the Marshall dsl I had here had a whole shimmery quality not quite voxey chime but really nice. @monkey with your 40w dsl do you use the half power mode much? How bout the hi gain but low like 4 and under: reasonable dirt but not over the top ? For fender, I’d be tempted to make the tweed kit!

I find that the 40 watt amp has a good range on the normal mode on volume and gain. With the 100 watt stack the Bugera PS1 attenuator is a necessity! The gain channel is something that has grown on me steadily. I do find the medium gain settings to be excellent compared to some very good pedals. I did a capacitor mod on both amps to change the frequency balance on the gain channels I believe you can google it it's called the C19 mod I use 130 pF. The speaker change made a big difference in the combo, too. The 2018/2019 amps are updated and may not need tweaking, I haven't tried them yet. Mine are the previous editions.

Regarding your comments on noise, both of my amps are super quiet noise wise on the gain channels.
and yes, they have that shimmery metallic clean sound that I really like as well. Loves to be hit with boost and drive pedals.

Nice, ya I am positive the used dsl I had is sick and the owner knows it, he dropped his price a c note easily, not going to buy someone else’s problem.
I don’t need 40 w for recording but tomorrow will compare the 29-40 dsl combo. The store carries Blackstar too so will check new ones out too. Drove out in country and tried s used BS 15 and separate cab, wasn’t impressed but at least one tube had been switched and the guy didn’t seem to know much about it or was playing dumb. Be good to try a new one out.
Thx!

I have a jtm1 here... it’s really great this was Marshall’s 50th anniversary 1 watt amp...tribute to the jtm 45.
I have a tone king imperial....it’s killer.
I have a AC30 here....it literally put me in hospital moving it.....sounds great...I don’t move it anymore.
I have a fender Princeton .....I must have done over a 1000 gigs with it....my favourite live amp.
Just this weekend I went to a Xmas jam and played through some sort of marshal valvestate thing, with a les Paul copy with humbuckers, it had a really nice clean sound...the drive left something to be desired though.
Cheers

)I have a 20 watt vox here now, it’s the chinese one: does clean really nice on board teen and Reverb but I find its sounds like a vox but doesn’t seem to really chime? What Vox do you have? I’m a big Vox fan, and the Chinese Voxes are not universally bad amps by any means. I have an AC-15 cc1 that’s had a few mods, and it sounds fantastic to me. I didn’t expect it to, quite frankly, b/c I’m an Alnico Blue fan and Greenback fan, but the Wharfedale actually sounds great to me. TONS of Voxy chime in mine. I had a Night Train for awhile, however, and it just never sounded that good to me. It definitely didn’t have the chime. I’ve had a couple different Fenders over the years—and I’ve loved them—but the Vox thing is totally unique and different in the top end. Sorry to go off-script on the Marshall question...

I was going to recommend the Origin 20H! I think speaker choice is crucial with it, I had great success with the Celestion A-Type. Although I get your comment that it’s Hiwatt-like.

Ya its the ac15c1, I'll be track gin with it today so will get to know it better and I have 7 days to work with it and or return. I thought the origin sounded really god it didn't have the same clean shimmer as the dsl. I guess amps are like guitars any two of the same guitar aren't actually the same just similar like you like fender, marshall, vox etc as each have particular sounds which are unique to them. I know where this is going I'll end up with 3-4 small valve amps: guess I love to plug and play not screw around with search menus etc. There is another guy in town selling a mint deville for under $500 can. It was fun to sort out my egnator first though. Demoing amps is hard work: ya know !! Attachment DeletedAttachment DeletedAttachment DeletedAttachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

I have to say that getting a Fender 57 Custom Deluxe (tweed) a few months ago was nothing short of life-changing. That amp probably contains every classic rock sound ever recorded. It is VERY quirky though!

Don’t really care which Marshall but almost everyone I have ever had to record benefitted from spending some extra on decent tubes! These things keep Bowie in buisness!

For VOX I really like the split input trick. Take a TSfemale-to-dual-TSmale splitter cable (mono to 2x mono) and plug your guitar into the single female side and the two output sides go into both inputs on the Vox. Now you can adjust the clean and driven tones together and get something more than screeching treble.

I ‘be been checking out some of the small all tube Marshall amps and getting confused! I want it really for recording. I own a Mojave Coyote which this review compares to a Marshall 20 Watt amp. It's a very versatile amp for both clean and distorted tones. For sale if you're interested. I used it with my Marshall 4 x 12 for distorted tones and my 2 x 12 alnico blues open back cabinet for cleans.

Great tone that's for sure With the dsl I had here, I really liked the clean channel and how it took a distortion pedal, but on the hi gain channel I only liked it up a bit, not looking for the , for me, at least, over the top saturation. It seems to me that the shimmering treble marshall sound, I really like, so far is just in the dsl. I'll likely keep the VOX, recorded with it this morning and had a really good experience. So, now I have 2 celestrian 12s in the two combos, so would just a 20 watt or so head.

I have two Marshall types and both record beautifully: 1. Marshall JMP1h—-50th anny 70s JMP Head. An incredible amp. Really truly sounds like a cranked 1959 SuperLead. Barely breaking up to 70s Marshall Gain. 2. Mesa TA15—Hi1 mode is pure Marshall...does JTM to JCM tones. 3 power modes...5-15-25watts. 5 watts is perfect for recording. Also get vintage Vox, Fender BF, And Mesa tones in this amp. Most versatile amp ever made, especially for recording. Both of these amps are all over the new album that Mister Chase and I are releasing in January under our collaborative moniker “A.C. Rev”.
