I'm not really sure how Antelope has their summing section set up in the Satori, but whatever they do whether it's active, buffered or passive.... That's they best sounding summing mixer I've ever heard. I'm not sure how they do it like I said, but there's a lot of electronics in that box and when you get into amplifiers and active summing mixers, if they don't have a killer design with a really extreme amount of headroom, they just sound flat to me.
The BLA PM8's..... I raved about them until I did a mix ITB and heard all the missing dynamics. It was the input transformers limiting that one. With Passive types the loading can make your mixes seem small if the preamps after them are not ok with that kind of load. I hope all that makes sense, but honestly the only summing mixers I'll vouch for anymore is the one in the Antelope Satori because I own it and can say with certainty that it rocks.

Or wait...Bart HRK does make a summing mixer, maybe you saw that and were just posting about summing in general.

The DB25 on the front kills it fo me. No dice. I agree and this is why some gear just shouldn’t be in the 500 format, but I see that 500 series hipster thinking it’s the meekest thing since his man bun.

FWIW, I wasn’t intending the thread to be just about the summing thingy. I guess that’s the first image on the main page. I was just curious about the whole line. Hadn’t ever heard of it.

I find the stuff to be copy catish, and a little silly. All the color stuff is just remakes of LTL modules. There is also way too much on the front panels, seem crowded.

An analog summing bus in one 500 space? I dont care how ugly or hipstery or unprofessional I look. The sound samples beat plugins from what I listened to. And it’s cheaper than some of them, and prebuilt.. wow!

Also consider though that if someone went with this, and needed a lunchbox.. the heritage summing bus lunchbox might start to be worth it, with volume and panning and VU meters. Although this you could patch db25 straight in from converters and put it in a tiny 500 box. I’m thinking mobile work. Hmm.

A passive analog summing bus is literally resistors. That’s all that it is... a DB25 connected to resistors, followed by a line amp.
Edit to say - looks like they’re using an IC op amp for the balanced input. So add some chips like an INA134 to that chain.
Not knocking it. It’s a cool idea. But I have a hard time believing there’s any particular magic or mojo in passive summing that you couldn’t get by running your in-the-box-summed mix out through an attenuator or pad followed by a line amp or mic pre.
Plus since it’s passive the panning is accomplished by jumpers internally so you get the correct drop for a center channel. I suppose you have pre-set mix needs, but pulling the card to change jumpers to pan a channel sounds like a headache to me.
I think summing in a 500 format is a round peg in a square hole.

I thought for sure they’d use some actual summing amps, but.. no? Oh well, makes sense anything worth having is rarely ever cheap. Just grabbed a tambourine today, even that I had buy the one that was almost double the price of the cheap ones.

Actually though, I looked again and they say they’re active summing using an “British” op amp. So it is active. But I don’t know what they’re using to drive the output, just says discrete. So ignore everything I said except the bit about the jumpers haha

DIYRE passive summing mixer is a better deal. Which I like. The capi sumbus is the ultimate summing mixer though.
Funny though I just looked through everything there. Was interesting looking stuff but nothing that made me want to buy anything..not sure why. I guess because every one I knew if another company making pretty much the same thing but it's much more well know and considered great sounding.

So we braved the cold to head over to Starbucks where the hipster barista who had a knit watch cap covering his man bun was talking about “ how old school retro cool the fact that the new Liam Niesen film trailer uses that old song with The cowbell “ I thought my wife was going to lose it like I did the time he said “ the RE20 is the greatest acustic guitar mic because it’s an LDC” He’s a producer like everybody who works at Starbucks and where’s a black watch cap over his man bun with Clark Kent Glasses.

But Eric, the RE-20 IS a "long dong caricature, (an LDC)" though maybe NOT the greatest acoustic guitar mic.

I got the 4-channel Colour processor on sale. I got a few of the British flavored console Colour modules, and they sound great. I've got two of the DIYRE Colour paletes filled up, and the Bart HRK ones can give a different flavor.

Lot's of complaints about summing but very little actual experience with these modules. I'm going to jump the boat on this and try a pair of the "pulteq" eq's. If I don't like them I'll just sell them to one of Eric's hipster man bun buddies.
