I'm sure this topic has been beaten to death more or less. Looking for anyone that's used both a lot.
I'm building my own mixing setup. Not planning on doing a lot of recording at my house, not yet anyways and even if I was it would likely be smaller overdub stuff.
What I am planning on is using a lot of analog gear. I still am planning on making a sort of mini console with 500 serise and CAPI sumbus. Then lots of other gear.
Native Protools does 64ch of simultaneous io. Seems like it would be plenty for me.
But curious if anyone started on Native and the moved to hdx for a good reason.
For what it's worth, I use HDX near every day at work. We also have a native portable rig I use but not near as much.
Thinking for mixing mostly only I'll be good with native hd. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

If you’re primarily mixing and any recording is overdub based, you’ll be more than happy with hd native. We’re an hdx house here and it’s necessary because of the full ensemble tracking and cues that go along with it.

I've been trying to visualize if I'll ever need more than 64ch of it but I guess I can upgrade later if needed.

I know several people who "upgraded" from HDX to HD native because they are mostly mixing these days.

HDX gives you even more Native power as well. Simply because it takes a huge load off the Host CPU.

Yeah I think I'll be good with a new Mac mini pro and hd Native. I'll be curious to hear how the new Mac Mini Pro handles things ... I am going to need a new studio computer in 2019 and I have a feeling any Mac Pro releases is going to be eye-wateringly expensive. I would be looking to track full bands though too ... so your mostly-mixing experience would not help me there. I am hoping some threads start to appear soon with some experiences on this ... I mean I don't want to start them

Sonnet makes a super cool 1U rack for the mini with two pcu cards. They are coming out with an updated one for the new pro next year. The new pro will no doubt be extremely expensive considering the cost of an iMac pro..

But my point is that new computers are so powerful these days it's kind of a mute point. Especially for mixing. For tracking hdx has some big advantages. I figure I'll be okay with 64ch io for now. Once I hit that barrier I'll do what drbill does. But I'm not sire I'll ever mix big enough stuff often enough to justify that haha

Just want to update this.
I bought two Digi 192s for a total of about 800 bucks with 24ch of analog io between the two of them.
Just got my HDX card for 1520 shipped today.
Will either get an annual payment for now or cough up for a perpetual license soon and I'll be up and running to start doing things again at home.
Plan is to get an orion32HD later for more io and that should cover me for a while.
Thanks all!

Just concentrate on the CAPI console build.
