I use SB Tape on every drum channel as the first insert. Machine "B" set on around 7-8 gives me just a touch of compression/saturation on transients. I like it and use it all the time. I have not tried many other. The Softube Tape works fine and I don't feel it's worth the time and money to start comparing against others. I know what it does and I like what it does. A subtle but effective process.

Tape sim is definitely a part of my workflow. I use it to "soften" things and add a little distortion sometimes. Tame those transients a bit, fuck up things a bit. Today even for getting drums to pump a little more. Along with my new Waves API 2500 I got for $24! Definitely. Stuff is just so easily pristine now. Sometimes thats what I want, but a lot of times I need some schmutz on the sound.
That Waves API 2500 is great. I'm using it right now on a mix.

Honestly, I’d have paid the $34 for the wobble and start/stop effects. They sound good and I’ll use them. I was thinking the same thing.

Just did a blind AB with VTM for myself and I picked Softube Tape. For whatever that's worth. VTM often seems a little cloudy and flattening to me, though other times I like it. The Softube seems to preserver or enhance dimensionality better to my ear.

There doesn't seem to be a consensus about which is best; rather, it seems there are a lot of good tape emulations out there and it seems to come down to personal taste, and those that can afford to have a few can cherry pick depending on the recording.

That may depends on that every tape machine is diffrent....

I like the bottom of the Slate VTM 456 setting at 15 IPS and the top end of the Softube Tape Color A at 15 IPS. What now LOL
