A buddy was telling how much he loves his Lynx Hilo, was wondering what people's thoughts (likes and dislikes) are about 2 channel mastering converter boxes ?

Best is subjective! Remember for mastering you'll probably need two stereo DACs as well as an ADC, if you want to monitor before and after processing. I think the Hilo does that, although not used one myself. Been very happy with my Crookwood conversion the last seven years.

I think part of what you said that might get lost is the 7 years, especially in mastering a piece you know and relie can be more important than the latest and greatest. Often we lose sight of this.

Well, what I meant by best was what people appreciate about what ever convertersthey are using for this purpose?
For example, I am sure Hilo is great but why pay for a touch screen panel when I could buy the new apogee 2x6 se at under 2/3rds of Hilo price and stick it in my Symphony MKII ?

I think you'd be totally fine with the 2x6SE. Its more about learning your gear and the nuances it adds to things and does to signal. Knowing that more than what you have will merit the best results when it comes to..well anything really but especially mastering.

I'd bet dollars to donuts that your standard Symphony is more than sufficient too. +1 for the Svartbox though.

I really like the HILO, its a good sounding box with a lot of great features. Its hard to not like it. Unless you are super picky, but...

I wasn’t being critical of the Symph mkii as I do appreciate it, was just curious what mastering converters people were using.
Remember I come from apollo so losing 2 converters for outs seems odd to me!

I’m still loving my Hilo here. A very honest no nonsense sounding unit. It is quite transparent so it doesn’t change the sound in any drastic way like a Burl for instance. It doesn’t soften the edges of the sound like symphony. For that reason, It is really a fantastic ADDA for Mastering, Master buss and/or monitoring. It also handles hot levels very well.
