Hey friends!
Looking for some suggestions for 16 Channel AD/DA Converters that also has support for AES/EBU?
To give some context, at the moment, I'm looking for something to support 16 preamps (I already have an Audient ASP880, and Profire 2626 that I'll eventually replace), and also have AES/EBU in and out to support digital recording for my axe-fx.
Any ideas? I can't find a converter that fits my needs that aren't in the several thousands.
AES/EBU is kinda optional, but it'd be a nice thing to have.
Shoot me your suggestions!
Thanks!

Not gonna find anything really worth it for under 1600ish used Id say. If that.
If you only need one AES in then a Symphony I/O could work. Or Avid HD I/O.
A new Lynx Aurora could be configured that way too.
Maybe an Orion would work too.

All great solutions, but I’m going to suggest buying a used RADAR with light pipe or AES card, 24ch of great conversion and a great standalone recorder as well, once you start using the controller you will never go back😁

That is the most expensive route haha

Hey I paid $1200 for my RADAR V with controller shipped from England ! DAAAAMMMMMMNNNN I would take the title of audio cheapskate but I think Stereophile trademarked it😎. There are bargains out there my friend, you just have to the time to find them and be liquid at the time. Of course it doesn’t hurt to have spent 30+ years making friends in the buisness.

Dumb question: How do you get the 16 analog channels into the computer? I see there's an 8 channel Adat connector, but don't see how to interface 16.

So really your best option is a PTHD accelerator card and using the Digi Link cable. You could use the SPDIF or ADAT but your channel count would be very limited and not a true 16x16.

That card is not cheap new, but perhaps there's one used. Having enough power in one interface to digitally transfer your analog tracks to the computer and hook up the AES connectivity of outboard FX and other digital devices is a dream come true.

Have a look at the Presonus Quantum 4848
I need one of those...
No AES/EBU however. ADAT is there.

Well the AES port is only a stereo setup. So really only one digital device..But you could hook up another IO box via the expansion port to get another16ch of whatever you want. Digital or analog. You pick. The OrionHD though would link up a lot of stuff. Or the symphony would do the same and you can run 2 of each so 64 ch of audio...

The MOTU 112D comes in at $1500. Basically a hub to take your Audient and Profire to the computer, and then some!

For the OP, that one stereo port would work for his Axe FX, right? I was wondering if my two used Aurora's I have on sale would work for him-they would- but the cost is more than this solution.

Yeah they would work great for that. Just wanted to state its only a stereo IO. Not more that than.

The MOTU 112D comes in at $1500. Basically a hub to take your Audient and Profire to the computer, and then some! No analog ins though I’m a little concerned that OP might be asking a confusing thing. See the audient and the profire both have their own conversion but need ADAT to work. So, OP, I don’t think you need 16 ins for your pres, you just need something for your pres to interface into your DAW. I’m almost positive both the Audient and the Profire can’t be used as just pres anyways; they’re ADAT units. Although if I’m wrong and you’re looking to add 16 MORE pres down the line, so you want line in, then my suggestion is a MOTU 16a. Same price as the 112D, with 16 analog I/O and two ADAT ports. So ideally you could hook up the Audient and the Profire to the ADATs of the 16a, and run line in with the AxeFX. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong here!

Ok, you're wrong here. ;-D
ASP800 and ASP880 both have analog line outputs, so you can use them as an 8 channel preamp.

My recommendation for converters with AES options is the Metric Halo -- Either LIO8 without pres or ULN8 with pres.
High end conversion, great clean preamps, and a very flexible mixer in there.
You could always sell one of your 8 channel boxes to help fund the ULN8 and you just might be getting better pres to boot.
